#Courage to travel alone and overcome fear of going abroad. #My own standards for what suits me. #A refreshing time enjoying the nature of New Zealand.
Hello. I am a 26-year-old office worker living in Seoul, and I like to travel alone and try out different challenges. This nature volunteer program in New Zealand was my first long-distance overseas trip and volunteer experience, and everything felt new to me.
I wanted to find a volunteer activity, so I decided to participate because I wanted to have the experience of volunteering abroad. I chose New Zealand because of the beautiful landscape photos, and I wanted to gain a little confidence rather than change anything specifically. It was my first long-distance overseas trip, so I was a bit nervous, but I didn't worry too much and went on the trip. Before leaving, I prepared by researching various information needed for my trip to New Zealand on the internet.
While there, I took a pickup truck to the activity site in the morning, did volunteer work, and returned to my accommodations around 2 to 4 PM. I mainly participated in planting-related activities and enjoyed the experience of planting a tree for the first time. I worked alongside local volunteers and had light conversations with them. The air was clean, and the natural scenery was beautiful. In the city, I could enjoy both shopping and nature. The local safety was not bad, so it was good for traveling alone, and during the activities, I was always with other volunteers, which made it safe. Even though I participated alone, everything was new, so I didn't feel lonely.
I enjoyed walking along the tram rail through downtown Christchurch, going around Hagley Park along the Avon River, and returning to the Arts Centre. I also liked experiencing the reality of being in a place where English is primarily spoken. This experience helped me learn a bit more about what I need and what does not fit me.
I gained the courage to go to a faraway country and do something on my own, and my fear of going abroad has decreased a lot compared to before. I would rate this experience as 5 points in terms of how much it helped change my life, and if my challenge score for my first overseas trip was 10 points, I think this activity strengthened that challenge. I hope future participants can fully interact with the people there and enjoy the local atmosphere as well. I would like to thank the counselor who kindly consulted and arranged my schedule.
