#I adapted to new places and people. #Knowledge of the medical environment and skills in Vietnam. #I had a satisfying volunteering time that ended early.
I am a third-year nursing student, and I went on a gap year volunteer program during my summer vacation. I applied because I wanted to experience nursing abroad and practice communicating in English with foreigners. I was worried before leaving, but it went well since I traveled with a group.
While there, we left at 7:30 AM and started volunteering at 8 AM. We took a 2-hour break for lunch and continued until 4 PM. The conditions were different from Korea, but it was a good experience, and I learned about healthcare and procedures in other countries. I appreciated how kind and attentive the patients and local guides were.
I met not only Korean friends but also friends from New Zealand and the U.S. Since most people came alone, we became close in the dorm. It felt like I grew while adapting to new places and people. I stayed safe because they checked in on me regularly via WhatsApp. Although the volunteering started early and the previous day’s plans were always short, I was satisfied with finishing early, and I recommend Coffee Apartment and its surroundings for sightseeing.
I would rate how much this project changed my life at 8 points. Comparing before and after, I think I need to practice communicating in English more. Next time, I will work on communicating in English more smoothly and try to make new friends with a smaller group. I think two weeks is just right, and thank you for answering my questions before departure.
