#I became sure that I want to be a nurse abroad. #A range of clinical skills and experience #A challenging but meaningful medical volunteer experience
Hello! I’m a female university student in my third year of nursing school. My dream is to become a nurse overseas, so I joined the medical volunteer program in Ho Chi Minh City to gain clinical experience abroad and take part in an activity that could help with my future job search. My goals were to gain meaningful clinical experience through volunteering, make friends from different countries, and travel around Vietnam.
Before leaving, I carefully packed the things I needed and bought bulky items there. The housing and hospital conditions were not very good, so daily life could be hard. Overall, it was quite safe, but it’s good to be cautious when using transportation such as Grab bikes.
I volunteered at the hospital from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. I had a lot of free time in the afternoons and on weekends, so I was glad I could travel to other cities. I recommend Mui Ne, Da Lat, and Nha Trang.
During my first week of volunteering, I met a patient who could not stand because a stroke had paralyzed their right side. I remember how hard it was to help with stretching and exercise two or three times a week. Three weeks later, the patient was able to stand up alone and walk with a cane. It was very moving to see such a good result up close.
I got to see and try more things than I could during clinical training in Korea, so I feel that my skills improved. I also liked being able to see Vietnam’s health care system and compare it with Korea’s. It was hard, but it was a meaningful experience.
I made many great Korean friends, but I became especially close to a medical student from Belgium who was my age. After volunteering ended, we spent the last week traveling together to Da Lat, Hue, Phong Nha, and Ninh Binh. I give this project 10 out of 10 for helping change my life. The friends I met are what I remember most.
If you plan to take part, I recommend bringing plenty of things to help you handle the heat. Volunteering for more than two weeks can also be very hard. Thank you.
