A Time to Think About the Future
Hello. My name is Kim Sang-jun, and I am a first-year student in the Nursing Department. I enjoy getting to know what kind of person I am through new experiences. While I am studying in the Nursing Department and going to school, I have always wanted to break free from my routine and experience different people and cultures.
I realized that stepping out of my familiar environment during overseas travel and volunteer work gives me much more stimulation than I expect. While traveling and volunteering in Vietnam, meeting new people and solving problems hands-on helped me understand that traveling is not just about taking a break but can also be a way to grow myself. A fellow student in our department shared the gap year program, and it looked fun, so I decided to apply.
For me, a gap year is not just a break from school but a time to challenge myself with various experiences I normally wouldn’t have. I want to travel to new places, meet different people, and learn new activities, so I can understand better what I like and what kind of life I want to live. The goal of this gap year was to gain certainty about my career path.
I had experience living abroad for a long time before, and I went with friends I already knew, so I wasn’t worried about staying abroad for a long time before leaving. When I got there, we all got together in the morning and went to the hospital. Around 11 o'clock, we had lunch for two hours, then returned to the hospital and finished our work around 3 o'clock.
After the schedule was finished, we enjoyed a tour freely and also did a local tour in Ho Chi Minh City. During both the program and free time, I was able to explore the surroundings and enjoy various activities, so I had a fulfilling time without being bored. I focused on the program in a pleasant and comfortable environment and enjoyed naturally mingling with new people.
I became friends with one Korean and one Australian during the gap year program. Experiencing new activities and various people that I don’t usually encounter helped broaden my view, and it was an unforgettable experience. In a new environment, facing and solving problems allowed me to learn many things that are hard to learn in everyday life.
Overall, the safety management was good, so I could participate in the program without worry. The guidance and management were also satisfactory. I had the opportunity to gain certainty about my career path, and I liked that I could perform medical activities.
I might not see visible changes yet, but I feel my thoughts have changed. I would rate how this project helped change my life as 10 points. Although I haven't determined everything yet, that’s why I want to experience more. I would like to advise those who will participate in the future to study a little English before going.
