Medical volunteer work in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam | A Time to Discover Nursing and the World

#From a narrow view in Korea to a broader perspective #Knowledge of IV insertion and instrument disinfection practices. #A touching service that made me think about the hearts of children.

My name is Song Ji-min, and I am a first-year nursing student. I participated in volunteer work at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City because I was interested after my university classmates looked for people to join them. I wanted to have a new experience that I couldn't have in Korea, and I wanted to see the hospital work up close. I was a little worried if I could communicate well, and I did not really prepare anything before leaving.

In the mornings, I would wake up, eat breakfast at the accommodation, and go straight to the hospital where I learned by helping with various tasks. I could learn things like how to insert IVs and disinfect tools. I felt that the hospital wasn't as clean compared to hospitals in my country. While it was safe inside the hospital, I thought the motorcycles outside looked a bit dangerous.

The first place I went to cared for children with problems in their legs or bodies. I helped a child who couldn't walk well because of leg pain. The child kept trying to run or kick something, and I wondered why. After some time, I thought that maybe they wanted a healthy leg because they were in pain, and it really touched my heart. Helping these children made me think a lot.

It was refreshing to see the hospital work up close, and by trying different fields, I could think about what might suit me. Being in an environment where I had to talk continuously with foreign friends opened up my narrow view. Although the program was different, I got a bit close with an American man, and we talked together every time we ate. I also bonded with a few others through the medical program.

After finishing my hospital volunteering, I had plenty of free time and did some sightseeing around Ho Chi Minh City. There were many fun things in Ho Chi Minh, and riding on a double-decker bus was the most memorable part. I think this project helped me so much that I would rate it 10 points for changing my life. I feel like I have grown more since participating.

To those who will participate in the future, I want to say to go to bed early and wake up early. I also want to thank the coordinator for their kind explanations that I will remember.
