Medical volunteering in Phnom Penh, Cambodia | Cambodia Volunteering: My Journey to Nursing

#From Being Dependent to Being Self-Directed #Practical Experience in Nursing in Cambodia #A Volunteer Trip Where I Met a Better Version of Myself

Hello. I am Kim Seong-hyun, a second-year nursing student taking a break. I participated in a volunteer trip to Cambodia to treat children because I wanted to build a unique resume and gain a lot of experience.

Through this trip, I hoped to become a stronger person and aimed to have as many experiences as possible. I decided to go alone, which made me a bit worried, but I gave myself the mindset of just enduring for four weeks. The departure preparations were guided step by step by Korean Gap Year, and I followed their instructions.

Once there, I worked from 8 AM to 11:30 AM, after which I had free time to relax and explore. There was even a time when I worked from 6 PM to 9:30 PM. I heard that there isn’t much to do in practice in Korea, but here I got to experience what nurses do, which was really great. I realized I didn't know as much as I thought and concluded that I needed to study harder to become a better nurse. I got to do many things I would never experience in Korea, and I learned a lot.

I went on this trip alone, but three Koreans joined me, and they took great care of me. Before this trip, I depended a lot on others and preferred to always be with someone. Now, however, I feel that I can do well on my own.

I’d rate this project a 10 because it changed my life significantly. I feel like my mental strength has improved, and I have become a more proactive person. This was truly a trip that helped me grow.

Riverside is close to where you're staying and has a lot of restaurants, so I definitely recommend it. If you can, check out Sihanoukville and Siem Reap too, as they may not have many tourist attractions but are nice for a leisurely trip.

Regarding safety, there weren’t many pickpockets as I expected, but you definitely need to be careful of mosquitoes. I think mosquito repellent is a must, as I caught dengue fever.

I regret not speaking more while I was there because my English isn’t very good. I wish I had just talked more, regardless of my skill level. I hope those who participate in the future won't worry too much and just try to talk.

Thank you for allowing me to have this valuable experience🥰🥰
