Medical volunteering in Phnom Penh, Cambodia | Finding Confidence Through Medical Volunteering in Cambodia

#From worries about nursing tasks to confidence #Experience with intramuscular injections, intravenous injections, and blood draws #A special experience volunteering in Phnom Penh's medical service

Hello. I am a third-year nursing student on a leave of absence. I wanted to have a meaningful experience during my leave and found out about a gap year, so I applied for the medical volunteer project in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. My goal was to gain confidence.

Before leaving, I worried about the hot weather in Cambodia, but thanks to the careful guidance during orientation, I was able to finish my month of volunteering safely and comfortably. The accommodations were very safe and comfortable, and it was safe as long as I didn't roam around late at night. Each day included mandatory volunteer work from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM, after which I could choose to do more volunteering, rest, or engage in other activities. I enjoyed inexpensive sightseeing and delicious food, and I was able to see and feel a lot during my travels on the weekends. I appreciated the opportunity to try nursing practices that I couldn't do as a Korean nursing student. At the hospital in Cambodia, I experienced giving injections, drawing blood, and more with real patients. The local nurses were better at English than I expected, so they explained everything well, allowing me to learn a lot. I was glad to meet my Korean roommate and become friends through this project. I also made friends with local nurses, explored Phnom Penh together, and made memories over dinner. I recommend visiting Angkor Wat and Sihanoukville.

This project provided a new experience that is hard to have in life, and I believe it has helped change my life by about 5 points. I have gained confidence that I can perform nursing procedures more skillfully in the future. It was beneficial to have special experiences that are not possible in life and to have many valuable experiences not found in Korea. For future participants, I would suggest stepping up and saying you will try, even if you haven't done something before.
