A pleasant and special volunteer activity at a Phnom Penh convent in Cambodia with foreign friends
"Volunteering was the perfect vacation for me."
✨ The perfect vacation: volunteering abroad in Cambodia
I spent the perfect vacation volunteering for two months at a convent in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Having experienced burnout at work, this experience gave me new energy. My daughter had previously volunteered through a gap year program, so I felt reassured to take part.
🏡 A safe and comfortable environment
The main reason I chose the convent volunteer program in Cambodia was the belief that it would be safe since it was run by a convent. Not only the volunteer organization, but also the accommodation, meals, and access to exercise facilities made daily life safe and comfortable.
👶 Bonding with the children
The main volunteer work was caring for babies—holding them, giving affection, putting them to sleep, and feeding formula. I devoted myself to it. Maybe because the children were also East Asian, they took to me quickly, like I was the first person they saw when I arrived.
What I remember most is taking the children on a picnic to the zoo. The kids had only seen bears in books and thought all bears were brown, so when a black bear appeared at the zoo they said "that''s a dog" or asked "where is the bear?" Their innocent reactions were both funny and cute.
💖 The meaning of volunteering and personal change
Through volunteering, rather than simple travel, my perspective on the world changed positively. For example, you know people who pick up trash while hiking—my viewpoint shifted a bit like that. I became interested in looking out for and helping my community, such as local children''s centers or charity marathons.
🎁 Revisit and putting sharing into practice
You know those clothes at home that you don''t wear but still look new? I collected those and asked people around me for donations, then revisited Phnom Penh. I took as much as I could fit on the plane and my own luggage was really just this small amount. After handing everything out and returning empty-handed, I felt so proud.
I wanted to share this experience widely, so I left reviews on my blog, Instagram, and elsewhere. I hope more people will participate in volunteering and feel the emotions I experienced.
