It was a time when I could reaffirm that I truly find teaching children rewarding and feel passionate about it. Everyone participated so enthusiastically in class that I returned to the accommodation moved after every lesson. Because of that, I felt my enthusiasm for teaching grow even stronger as I thought about what to prepare for the next class :) .

    Jeon Chaehyun''s gapper review

    # Hello! I am a university student who completed my overseas volunteer activity bucket list :)

Hello, I''m a 22-year-old university student who returned after realizing my overseas volunteer bucket list in Bali. I enjoy traveling and take joy in meeting teenagers and conducting educational programs :)

Before my university life ended, timeI wanted to be sure to go on an overseas volunteer trip when I had some free time, so while looking for various activities I learned about Korea Gapeeyeor. Among the many programs offered by Korea Gap Year, I really wanted to try the education program I liked, and the moment I saw Bali''s beautiful scenery I decided to choose this program!

*Jeon Chaehyun chose Bali, where she could experience beautiful nature along with the educational volunteering she wanted! Want a tailor-made project that''s perfect for you? We highly recommend a one-on-one consultation with a gap year specialist!

    # I wanted to spend time in a new environment, meet new people, and make lots of great memories.

Living in a new environment, meeting new people, and the experience of volunteering itself was an important goal!

Since entering university, I felt that having many new experiences is very important. I resolved to have as many diverse experiences as possible when the opportunity arose, and the gap year period was no exception. In particular, I started preparing for exams this year, so I participated with the thought that I should return full of good memories that would become driving motivation for my goals before starting in earnest.

    # I was truly happy spending time with students with bright, sparkling eyes.

First of all, the most moving thing during the activities was the bright, sparkling eyes of the teenage students who came to attend the classIt was. All the various activities were meaningful and enjoyable, but Above all, the time with the students was the most precious and happiest.Even students who weren''t good at English tried hard to participate in class by asking the friends beside them or the local teachers nearby; their efforts were really endearing and I was grateful.

When class ended and the children said they were disappointed and wanted to do more, I think that''s truly the greatest compliment and encouragement for a teacher. Thanks to the gap year activities, it was a time when I could reaffirm that I truly find teaching children rewarding and feel passionate about it. Everyone participated so enthusiastically in class that I returned to the accommodation feeling moved after every lesson.Because of that, I thought about what more to prepare for the next class, and my passion for teaching burned even brighter :) .

In Bali, there is a culture or custom where students, when showing respect to a teacher, take the teacher''s hand and place it on their forehead. Receiving that was a very proud and moving memory.

Much of the credit for being able to complete the education successfully goes to the local coordinators. In particular, the coordinator who was always with us during mentoring and English education comes to mind first. Because they could speak several languages,, they assisted well so that the activities proceeded smoothly. Thanks to them, I was truly grateful and happy that I was able to carry out the education I had prepared to the fullest.

Not only that, the other local staff who helpedEveryone always encouraged me, praised me generously, and took care of me attentively, so I could participate with a more relaxed mind. Even when I was very nervous on the first day, I received a lot of encouragement, and after class I was praised for the good content, which gave me the confidence to continue with the following classes. haha

Actually, I''m a bit shy around strangers, so I was nervous and found it a little difficult when I first started mentoring and teaching. I had quite a bit of experience teaching teenagers, so I adapted quickly, but when I met mentees who were older than me I felt unsure about how to approach them and how to communicate. Still, the staff members beside me helped a lot with interpretation and suggested many topics to discuss, so I was able to carry out the activities without major problems!

Also, all the villagers I met during the program were kind and warm, so every time I spoke with them I felt my heart warmed.

Also! The morning activities held each day were really meaningful and great. The program was satisfying in that, true to the name ''volunteer trip'', it offered both a sense of reward and fun!

    # I felt so overflowing with happiness that I felt relaxed and fulfilled!

Now that I''ve been on the educational volunteer trip with the children, I feel a bit more relaxed and fulfilled. Having felt so overflowing with joy and happiness during that week, I think I''ll be filled with positive and bright thoughts for a while.Just having one more good memory that makes me smile just thinking about it makes me feel unexpectedly reassured. If I keep these precious memories as I wanted, I also gained the confidence that I can handle whatever comes in the future well.

Also, I realized a lot that in the end, everything depends on my mindset. The program structure was fairly loose, and I had full autonomy over the themes and content of the lessons. That meant I could try a variety of things I wanted to do, and depending on how earnestly I engaged in the activities, what I gained could really be different. It was a precious time to feel that not only this activity but also the meaning of all future experiences is something I create :)

For those considering participating, it might be good to think a bit in advance about what to talk about during mentoring! Mentoring is not the typical classroom format; rather, think of it as a time to freely exchange questions and answers and practice English conversation. So, to allow mentees to express themselves more, I thought it would proceed more smoothly if you prepare suitable questions in advance.

As a tip, after reading other participants'' reviews I bought some simple candies and took them with me, and it was great that the students all enjoyed them :) The candy wrappers had short Korean messages written on them, so explaining what they said to the students was a kind of fun. Of course, the students will love you even without gifts! I did feel a little regret thinking I should have brought more gifts to hand out to the students. haha

    # Bali volunteer work — here''s my daily routine!

Breakfast is between 7 and 8 AM, and then mentoring classes take place in the morning. Mentoring is aimed at adults living in the village, such as fishermen, snorkeling guides, and tour guides. It helps them practice conversation by casually talking in English. After class, you help these people experience various activities.

After classes and activities end, you come back to rest and have lunch. Then from 2 to 4 PM you return to the study space to teach English to students. After the English lessons, you go back to the accommodation to rest and then have dinner. Afterwards, you can have free time or sometimes hold evening English classes for middle and high school students in the study space. The lesson content was entirely up to me, so I just needed to prepare what I wanted to teach the students.

Overall, the schedule is relaxed and there is plenty of time to rest.I followed the set schedule and didn''t do any extra travel. There was a lot of time to rest, but since I participated in the week-long program, there wasn''t enough free time left to go on trips.

However, on the last day when returning to the airport, the driver would often stop the car so we could admire the beautiful scenery, have coffee, and look at the sea~The orientation materials also recommended arriving as early as possible and departing as late as possible, and that''s really good advice!! The village is quite a distance from the airport, but the route itself is pretty so it''s better to see it in daylight, and the driver will stop along the way to give a brief tour. Participants, please keep that in mind :)

    # My Bali volunteer trip — gap year preparation tips!

I applied for the program almost six months in advance. Given the long preparation period, I organized a to-do list by month and prepared slowly.

Reading reviews from people who did a gap year with this program and those who traveled to Bali, and thoroughly organizing the essential items to bring, allowed me to move calmly and not panic right before departure.

Korea Gap Year also provided various guidance documents and a checklist that could be used for a final check before departure, which I found very useful!

    Leisure ★★★★★

: I had a lot of free time, but there were also many new experiences, so in my free time I was always busy writing in my diary haha. I liked that I could spend a lot of time reflecting on myself!
