#Enjoying new challenges instead of fearing them #Friendship with friends from different countries #I enjoyed the time spent at the hospital and traveling.
Hello. I am a nursing student who graduated last year and got the chance to apply for a gap year before starting work in a hospital. I have always been curious about healthcare facilities in other countries and wanted to experience Cambodia, a place I'd never been. I also aimed to change myself since I was very afraid of challenges. I didn't prepare leisurely, but I was able to complete each gap year mission and get ready.
I had never stayed away from home for such a long period, so I felt a little nervous about adjusting to a new environment. However, after arriving, I received support from Korean friends and met many good friends and teachers, which helped me adapt quickly. Although it was daunting at first, I enjoyed tackling new environments with the good people I met.
From 8 AM to 11:30 AM, I could observe nurses and nursing students at the hospital and practice nursing. In the afternoons, I explored Phnom Penh city. Meals were provided at affiliated restaurants, and I could travel on weekends. It was a different community life compared to Korea, but I encountered no inconveniences.
For traveling, I mainly used the sleeping bus that departs Friday evenings and returns on Sunday evenings. If you think you might be tired on Monday, I suggest taking a bus that leaves Sunday morning and arrives Sunday afternoon. I loved the fact that I could enjoy traveling and delicious food in addition to my hospital work, but I needed to be careful about the crowded traffic and avoid being out late at night.
Since I lived alone in a foreign country and not in a group, I met friends from many countries. Even with language differences, it created strong bonds and gave me courage to face unfamiliar experiences. I tried to seize learning opportunities, but I regret not having a more proactive attitude later on. While it's still hard to feel dramatic changes after participating, I believe I have become braver after gaining diverse experiences.
Although it’s scary and daunting at first, I recommend trying it since it offers unique experiences. Just remember to be safe while you do!
