Cambodia (Phnom Penh) medical volunteer program treating children with common ailments

Review by gap year participant Kim Jae-ah

    # Hello. I am a nursing student who participated in a medical volunteer program in Cambodia.

Hello~ Using my school break, for one month I participated in the ''treating children that anyone can treat''

Cambodia Phnom Penh medical volunteer program''I am a third-year nursing student.

Because I had a lot of interest and passion for volunteering, I really wanted to try overseas volunteer work.

While looking up related information in my spare time, I found the Cambodia overseas medical volunteer program.

I thought it would be a great opportunity to volunteer using my major,so as soon as I had the financial and time flexibility I applied right away 😊

    * For Kim Jae-ah, who wanted to make foreign friends and gain a lot of medical experience, customized one-on-one personal missions for activities to get close to foreign friends and to gain various medical experiences were provided daily, and a Gap Year notebook was also provided so participants could reflect on themselves and make plans.

    >> Participation fee 100 won! Go to the Gap Year mission

    # My goal was to make foreign friends and gain a lot of medical experience.

Through the Cambodia overseas medical volunteer program,I wanted to have the opportunity to interact with foreign friends of various nationalities.

Also, as a future healthcare professional, my goal was to gain a lot of medical experience to build confidence in my work.

I prepared for departure using the documents sent by Korea Gap Year.

Because I had applied for the program in a hurry, I was worried about preparing in a short time,

from plane ticketsto visas, travel insurance, and the necessary vaccination certificates.

Thank you for helping me prepare step by step through Korea Gap Year.I was able to depart safely!

    # It was beneficial because I could gain medical experience that is difficult to have in Korea, and I learned a lot.

There were so many things I liked that I can''t write them all here :) Especially, seeing medical facilities that cannot be experienced in Korea,

and being able to gain medical experienceIt was beneficial.I was grateful that all the medical staff treated me kindly, those I met there

to the local students as wellI learned a lot about skills, attitudes, and so on.The patients I was responsible for are also very memorable.

Because I was clumsy compared to the regular medical staff in many ways, the patients might have been upset with me,

I was moved by how the patients quietly watched over me and even offered words of thanks.

Also, I enjoyed learning about Cambodian local culture, and while working with volunteer friends from various countries,

I am grateful that I was able to make many memories.

    # I gained confidence in what I do!

I lacked confidence in what I do. No matter what I did, I always doubted myself and pushed myself.

Even before participating in the Cambodian overseas medical volunteer activity, I kept thinking, ''Can I do this well? Will I be of any help?''

those thoughtsI think I kept having them.

However, through the Cambodian overseas medical volunteer activitymeeting various people and gaining many experiences,

and talking with the Gap Year coordinator,as I took time to reflect on myself I gradually became stronger internally.

I''m still lacking, but,I have confidence in what I do.I''ve decided to move forward!

What does a typical day of overseas medical volunteer work in Cambodia look like?

Usually we arrive by 8 AM, volunteer medically for four hours, and finish at 12 PM. However, if you want...

After lunch at 12, it''s okay to stay until 4–6 PM. There are formal clock-in/out times, but the work schedule is flexible so...

You can work as long as you wish. After finishing work, it''s all free time. I usually...

spent it with foreign volunteer friendshaving dinner and talking about various episodes from that day''s volunteer activities

we had a chat time. On weekends,we visited Cambodian tourist spotstogether and made the most of our time!

My personal tip for a Cambodia overseas medical volunteer gap year!

    (Language)

English is fairly well understood, but locals mainly speak Khmer among themselves. You don''t necessarily have to study Khmer, but...

I recommend at least learning how to read and write Khmer numerals. The patient bed positions are written in Khmer numerals,

so if you learn them beforehand,it will make working much easier!

    (Accommodation)

You stay in a guesthouse provided by the organization. Due to Southeast Asia''s hot weather, insects sometimes appear, but...

you''ll get used to it over time :)There was air conditioning and hot water, so living was comfortable, and especially the

resident local coordinatorbeing there made me feel safe.

    (Meals)

We mainly used the restaurant affiliated with the accommodation, and the food was generally tasty. There are marts and restaurants nearby, so...

if you sometimes want different food, be sure to check them out!

    (What to bring)

Since the weather is hot, bring lots of short-sleeved T-shirts. Especially as you''ll sweat a lot during activities, rather than new clothes...

Bring old clothes.I recommend taking them. Also, some tourist sites have dress restrictions, and to prevent insect bites at night,

long-sleeved shirts and long pants It''s a good idea to pack one or two!

    # Participate with a sincere spirit of service!

Rather than expecting professional medical activities, keep in mind that it''s an opportunity to volunteer sincerely as a healthcare provider,

if you join, it will be better. I thought I would be doing activities that required a lot of my nursing knowledge

with that expectation, I began the overseas medical volunteer work in Cambodia, Of course, professional medical activities also take place, but

if you focus only on that, I found myself unintentionally disappointed when it differed from what I expected.Just the patients'' healthy recovery and

helping their healing I hope you prioritize the goal of simply having a good experience. You''ll gain even more!

    # My recommended travel route for a Cambodia volunteer trip!

I visited both Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. Siem Reap is so famous that if you come to Cambodia, you should definitely visit it at least once.

If you enjoy relaxation, I recommend going to Sihanoukville. Sihanoukville is a famous tourist city in Cambodia and

it has several beautiful beaches. In particular, there''s a beach called Ochheuteal Beach next to Sihanoukville''s Independence Hotel,

the sunset there was so beautiful that it still remains a vivid memory.

    # My gap year?

    Experience ★★★★★

Because there are differences from Korea in medical technical aspects and cultural aspects, I had many unique and new experiences.

    Learning★★★★★

I learned a great deal not only about medical knowledge and skills but also about ways of living and attitudes toward life.

    Leisure★★★

On weekends I had plenty of time, so I took a short trip with volunteer friends to the outskirts of Cambodia and was able to make good memories.
