Cambodia Phnom Penh medical volunteer program treating children that anyone can participate in. Review by gap-year participant Park Geon-chan. |
# Hello. I''m a university student majoring in a medical field who participated in an overseas medical volunteer program in Cambodia!

Hello! I participated for about one month from July to early August ''treating children that anyone can participate in
who participated in the ''Cambodia Phnom Penh medical volunteer program'' I am a college student majoring in a medical field.
I''ve enjoyed volunteering for a long time, so I wanted to try volunteer work that suited my major and was also distinctive.
At the same time, I wanted to improve my English skills. In the meantime, through internet searching I found out about Korea Gapyear''s Cambodia overseas medical volunteer program,
I applied right away.
*For Park Geon-chan, who wanted to try a unique medical volunteer experience and socialize with many foreign friends, activities providing a variety of medical experiences, customized one-on-one personal missions to help make friends with foreigners were provided daily, and a Gap Year Note that allowed him to reflect on himself and make plans was also provided.
>> Participation fee 100 won! Go to the Gap Year mission
# I wanted to meet various foreign friends and gain a lot of medical knowledge and experience.

Through the Cambodia overseas medical volunteer program I wanted to have time to get closer to foreigners.
Also, beyond what I learn at school, my goal was to gain a lot of medical knowledge and practical medical experience in real clinical settings.
Due to personal circumstances, I had to pack my luggage the day before leaving the country,
but thanks to the thorough materials provided by Korea Gap Year, I was able to prepare easily.
I prepared important documents in advance, such as my visa, plane ticket, and vaccine certificate.
# I was happy to meet kind foreign colleagues, and it was amazing to apply the knowledge I had learned only in theory to real practice!

Everyone I met during the medical volunteer work in Cambodia was kind, but,
In particular, my roommates would always be the first to say ''let''s go together'' whenever someone went somewhere.
They took good care of me and treated me with respect, which I appreciated. We became so close that later we even went on a trip to Vietnam together, haha
I also became close with the Cambodian nurses and was able to talk a lot about nursing duties.
I studied my major subjects very hard in Korea, and it was amazing to see the things I had learned appear in the practical training during the overseas medical volunteer work,
and it made me feel that I should study even harder.
# I became much more outgoing and started approaching others without hesitation!

Compared to before participating in the Cambodia medical volunteer program, I became more outgoing.
Also, I gained the courage to approach someone without hesitation. Not to mention, I learned a great deal about medical knowledge!
Meeting many people and facing new situations through various experiences seems to have had a positive impact on me as well, and I feel very proud.
# What does a typical day of the Cambodia medical volunteer program look like?

I wake up at 8 AM, have breakfast, take a tuk-tuk, and arrive at the hospital by 9 AM.
Before starting volunteering, we have a meeting: it''s conducted in Khmer first, then the same content is repeated in English, which takes about 40 minutes to 2 hours.
After that, we begin the main medical volunteer activities and then have lunch.
After lunch, we resume medical volunteer work until 4 PM and then finish work for the day.
All time after work was free time, so I visited nearby attractions or went for walks with foreign friends.
# My personal tips for the Cambodia medical volunteer program!

(Language)
The language most commonly used in practice was English. Occasionally there were people who weren''t good at English or had poor pronunciation, but
we somehow manage to communicate, and if you keep listening you''ll get used to it, so don''t worry too much.
(Accommodation)
I stayed in a guesthouse provided by the organization. Depending on the timing, you may share a room with other participants,
or you may have the room to yourself.
I had two foreign roommates, and I met friends who really suited me; we made many great memories.
(Meals)
Meals were provided by the organization and were personally fine. However, if you are sensitive to water, be sure to buy bottled water!
(Packing list)
Since the accommodation is used by many people, it''s good to bring several towels.
Also, because it''s hot and you''ll sweat a lot, bring plenty of clothes, and if you need perfume, bring it!
There''s one outlet per room, so bringing a power strip is very useful.
As with any country, I recommend not bringing expensive items unnecessarily.
Cards are rarely accepted in Cambodia, so bring US dollars!
# Mix with people from various nationalities!

I participated alone in an overseas medical volunteer program in Cambodia, but if you go with others, don''t rely only on other Koreans,
try to befriend people from different countries. You''ll naturally experience various cultures,
your worldview will broaden and your foreign language skills will improve as well :)
There are especially a lot of French people at the guesthouse, so if you study a little French before you go, you''ll make friends quickly!
# My recommended travel route for overseas medical volunteering in Cambodia

When you think of ''Cambodia'', the first thing that comes to mind is Siem Reap''s Angkor Wat — be sure to visit. I also recommend nearby Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
The process to get there is a bit complicated, but it has a charm different from Cambodia and was fun.
Especially, Ho Chi Minh has many bars and clubs, so if you like that, definitely go.
Also, transportation is convenient, and if you rent a motorbike you can get around easily.
# My gap year is!
Experience★★★★★
I was able to experience many nursing tasks that I couldn''t do in Korea.
Learning★★★★★
I was able to learn a lot about nurses'' duties and medical knowledge.
Environment★★★
It''s much hotter than in Korea. Although every room has a fan, air conditioning is inconsistent, so it''s not as cool as indoors in Korea.
If you are sensitive to heat, be sure to prepare a handheld fan, cooling mat, etc.
Safety★★★★
It was safer than I expected, so I walked around the area a lot during my free time.
Leisure★★★★★
On weekends, I went sightseeing in Siem Reap, Koh Rong, Battambang, etc. with foreign friends.
