Study English in Cebu, Philippines without stress and while having fun — that''s all! Seongwoo Jeong, gapper (23 / university student) / 3-month language study gap year in Cebu, Philippines |
Hello. I''m Seongwoo Jeong, a 23-year-old university student who wants to become a diplomat.

Hello.I''m Seongwoo Jeong, a 23-year-old university student who participated in the Cebu language study project.I want to be more confident than anyone, become a bit more friendly when meeting people, and have some breathing room in my busy life.
I chose this project after consulting with the representative of Korea Gap Year. They told me it would help resolve my inner difficulties, and believing that, I went to Cebu.Looking back, three months was really a short time.
I wanted to change myself.

During my gap year, my goal was to improve my inner difficulties.
There were many points to improve, such as ''being self-conscious'' and ''not approaching people I meet for the first time easily.'' To be honest, I couldn''t fully acknowledge my difficulties.I acknowledged it intellectually, but I couldn''t accept it in my heart. My initial goal was to solve the difficulties I understood intellectually. Looking back, I didn''t solve them, but...I was able to reach the stage of acknowledging them in my heart.
I learned a lot during the gap year.

I learned most of all that goodbyes don''t become easy quickly.Parting with people I had grown close to was extremely difficult for me.AndI realized that you don''t have to live your life aiming for only one career. It means that even if you''re doing one thing, you can make a new choice if you come to like something else! In particular, I realized that opportunities exist not only in Korea but all over the world.
Lastly,I began to acknowledge and understand the difficulties I had. I felt it in my heart, too!My thinking became bigger and firmer, so I was able to address my past shortcomings.
I gained strength thanks to the love of my friends and teachers.

My friends and teachers showed me abundant love. They always told me I was an amazing person and that I could achieve what I wanted. They also said they knew I was kind, empathetic, and thoughtful, but told me not to suppress those qualities myself. They said that doing so seemed to make things very hard for me.

I met such wonderful people. Thanks to the love I received, I also learned how to give love to others.I don''t want to let go of my bond with these people!
# A day in Cebu!

School classes were from 8 AM to 5 PM. After classes ended, I looked forward to spending the evening with friends. After dinner, we went to a cafe or studied in the study hall.
On weekdays I went to bed at 11 PM, but on Fridays after class I went out to eat and drink with friends, enjoying Friday night. On weekends I sometimes went to Moalboal, and I was always out somewhere having fun!
# My Cebu language-study preparation TIP!

- Language
: Everyone uses English. I tried to live in English as much as possible during the language program.
- Accommodation & Meals
: I stayed in a dormitory with single, double, and triple rooms. The meals were Korean-style, so they suited my taste.
- Packing list
: Just bring what you need. You can buy everything locally after you arrive.

My Cebu language-study gap year was:
Experience★★★★★
: I''ve traveled a lot, but what I learned here was definitely different. I had many conversations with people, learned about their thoughts, and was able to learn many things.
Learning★★★★★
: The teachers taught so well that learning deserves 100,000 points!!
Environment★★★★★
: The atmosphere is quite different from Korea — more free. It was a place where I could experience what ''leisure'' means. The sunshine was especially always pleasant.
Safety★★★★
: Relatively safe.
Leisure ★★★★★
: Do we even need to say anything? The surroundings are all islands.
