Program Introduction

This project isa project to excavate Roman-era artifacts in the Balearic Islands of Spain and to vividly experience the lives of people from the Roman era 2,500 years ago.You can excavate artifacts such as ancient skeletal remains of Roman people, metal jewelry of royalty, coins, and pottery that were used for decoration or display. It is recommended for those who have interest and curiosity about the Roman era, those studying archaeology or history, or anyone who wants to try the unique experience of excavating artifacts!

Feel the thrill of discovering ancient Roman artifacts with your own hands!Attention to those majoring in archaeology or history! This is an opportunity to excavate ancient artifacts that preserve the daily life of people in the Balearic Islands—the setting of the Roman era 2,500 years ago.

The feeling of confronting the splendid history of the Roman Empire in person would be an indescribable emotion, right? Moreover, this artifact excavation project can serve as a foundation for academic research across various fields such as geology and anthropology! Introduce to the world the sleeping artifacts of the Roman era that would be featured in TV documentaries. Learning by doing at a vivid field site will give you an experience you'll remember for a lifetime.

Create your own story by having a special experience in Spain, a country with one of the oldest histories in Europe.Participate in this artifact excavation project where you can vividly experience European history and have a unique experience others can't easily have, then use your free time or travel after the project ends to explore every corner of Spain!

In the Balearic Islands where the project takes place, you can enjoy a tour of Ibiza, known for its beautiful natural scenery, and experience local culture by learning Spain's traditional dance, flamenco. And one thing you can't leave out when thinking of Spain is football! You can watch a match at a stadium with passionate football fans, and also admire Antoni Gaudí's famous architecture representing Spain. Spain is a country you should visit at least once in your life—experience it properly on this opportunity!

Learn about Roman-era history and historical sites, and topics related to archaeology and history. Learn how to use the tools and techniques needed for excavating artifacts and actually unearth real artifacts. Communicate with local staff and fellow participants, improving English conversational skills. Feel the thrill of realizing “I can encounter a world from history” amid Europe’s alleys, ancient ruins, and unfamiliar cultures. At excavation sites, cultural explorations, and conversations with locals, you gain new perspectives different from before. It’s an adventurous setting, but rather than mere fun, you become aware that “I am learning through this.” Meeting new friends and experiencing cultural diversity gradually loosens rigid thinking. A short but intense first step makes you want to continue such explorations in the future. Touching artifacts that hold long histories evokes deep emotion. Gain intellectual accomplishment and satisfaction through new knowledge and experiences. Attain deep reflection in a daily life where history and the present coexist. Program Activities

Activity Details

- This projectis conducted inEnglish.

- Morning activities start around 7:00 and last about 4 hours; afternoon activities take place for about 3 hours after a light lunch.

* Activity times may be subject to change depending on the local institution's schedule and circumstances.

- Activity time is about 7 hours per day (including lunch), and activities include artifact excavation, lab work,

practical training and lectures, outdoor activities, and site visits. After 7 days of activities, participants are given 2 days off.

- Fieldwork takes place in the morning; afterward, participants return to the center to rest and then carry out indoor activities.

- After completing the project activities, you will receive a certificate of completion from the local institution.

※ This project has specified start and end dates,The number of participants per period is limited to a total of 14people.

1) Morning Activities

- Excavation of Roman artifacts at Roman-era ruins

Participants will take part in excavations at the ancient Roman city ruins located on the north of the island, and will be safely transported by pickup from local professional staff. Participants will receive a brief introduction and explanation on how to excavate artifacts and then engage in excavation-related activities for about four hours. You can learn basic methods and techniques for excavation. The site is located near the coast—join the dig and imagine the Roman era! During the activities, participants may discover artifacts used in that period, such as coins, tools, jewelry, metal parts, and clothing.

2) Afternoon Activities

- Collection and restoration of Roman-era artifacts

Excavated artifacts are cleaned and carefully organized piece by piece to restore them to their original condition.

- Analysis of Roman-era artifacts

Collected artifacts are analyzed together with archaeology experts. Through the excavated artifacts, researchers examine shapes and altered colors to determine a more accurate period.

The main activities involve excavating artifacts at archaeological sites, so as long as you can communicate at a basic level in English, you can participate in the project. Classes conducted during the activities areconducted in English and Spanish.

About the Provider

We are an organization established to provide projects where university students who want to study archaeology can take part directly in excavations. To date, students from a total of 1,768 universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries have participated in this project. We teach excavation methods to university students worldwide and investigate the artifacts uncovered under the guidance of archaeology experts.We collect data and apply GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to update all information related to Roman-era artifacts in computer system files. Participants can acquire specialized knowledge of classical archaeology by studying artifacts in the laboratory alongside archaeology experts.

A message from the local institution representative

Our institution is an international school that not only teaches archaeology but also operates a variety of professional programs, including exchange student projects, anthropology, GIS, underwater archaeology, archaeological drawing techniques, photography and digital illustration, conservation activities, fine arts, and museum- and archaeology-related videography. Participants gain diverse experiences by conducting surveys and excavations in the field. Those interested in related fields are always welcome!

Accommodation

This accommodation is located about 40 minutes from the project site. It is conveniently situated for going to shopping malls or the city. A beautiful beach is a few minutes' walk from the accommodation, and from the rooftop you can enjoy views of the entire city of low-rise buildings without obstruction from tall buildings.Generally, 2 to 6 people share a room and bathroom..It is a place where you can live with and chat with foreign friends staying at the accommodation.

Located in the western Mediterranean, Spain’s Balearic Islands are known as a resort destination for their beautiful scenery and mild climate; they are about a 40-minute distance from the Barcelona area. Although they are large islands, they remain peaceful and are not crowded with many tourists.

Because they have remained relatively undiscovered by many tourists, they feature pristine natural beaches and are ideal for a variety of water sports such as scuba diving, kayaking, and yachting. You can also visit numerous museums to see Roman-era artifacts and ruins, making the islands an attractive place to experience Roman archaeological sites.

Installment payment information

If you have difficulty paying in full, pay an upfront registration fee of KRW 500,000 and pay the remaining balance within two weeks; based on the date the registration fee is paid, the process to confirm project participation will proceed and availability and TO will be checked. To participate on your desired date and period, securing a spot quickly is important! (Non-refundable once participation is confirmed)

*However, if the start date is near, the schedule for paying the remaining balance may vary depending on the situation.

Early bird discount and Urgent application Information

All gap year projects require standard processing procedures and a gap year preparation period, so we recommend applying at least 3 months before the project start date.and as a rule, applications should be submitted no later than 2 months prior.However, if there are unavoidable reasons or you urgently need to join a project, you can pay an additional fee through the urgent application service and we will assist with the fastest possible processing.

*We assist with the fastest possible processing, but there is basic time required for communication with local organizations and confirmation of participation, and since all procedures are carried out the same as for regular participants, participants using the urgent application service must actively cooperate with the Korea Gap Year operations teamand are required to do so.
