#Increased independence and confidence #Deep friendships with international friends #Satisfaction, learned how to open up to others
First of all, I had a very satisfying language study experience in the Philippines. Beyond improving my English skills, I learned many things such as how to open my heart to people and how to adapt to an unfamiliar place. At some point, you’ll realize, “I can speak this quickly now.”
Don’t stress about English anymore! Learn English while having fun in Cebu! Kwon Yonghyun — Gapper (26, university student) / 8-week gap year |
Aiming to improve my English skills while living away from home
My goal was to make friends with people from different countries.
Hello, I am a fourth-year university student. When I joined this project I was 25 and on leave from school and went on a language study trip. I was very interested in English and didn’t have a lot of money, so I chose a language program in the Philippines.
Before leaving, I packed clothing and cosmetics suitable for the local weather. I do not recommend bringing a lot of luggage. I packed only the minimum.
Through this project,my goal was to improve my English skills while living away from home and to make friends with people from various countries.
* For Mr. Kwon Yonghyun, who wanted personal change, tailored 1:1 daily missions for self-reflection and new experiences/perspectives were provided, and a gap-year notebook was also provided so he could reflect and make plans.
Learning how to communicate with multinational friends
I was able to naturally reduce my fear of speaking English a bit.

A typical day in the Philippines: after waking and having breakfast, you attend classes until lunch. Then after lunch you have classes until dinner. After that, only students who signed up for additional individual classes take them, and the rest is free time.
First of all, through the gap year in the Philippines, I lived alone away from home, which helped me develop independence and gain confidence.By learning how to communicate with multinational friends, I was able to naturally lessen my fear of English.
A particularly memorable friend was my roommate who lived with me throughout the eight weeks in the Philippines. She had arrived at the language school one week before me and was from Taiwan. We shared interests like exercise and travel and our personalities matched very well, so we quickly became close. They were always considerate of others, and I felt and learned a lot from them.
One day I got sick in the Philippines. I was too ill to attend class and stayed in my room. I hadn’t brought extra medicine from Korea, so I wasn’t taking any medication when...That friend borrowed medicine from other friends on my behalf and even bought me lunch and dinner.
Because they were so sociable and I spent time with them, I naturally met and hung out with many people. Another memorable friend was an older person from Taiwan.
That friend always took care of us like a father and was an amateur photographer. They always carried a camera and took photos and videos of us. Thanks to that, we were able to keep good memories in pictures.
Don’t be afraid — if you speak to people first and open your heart, you will surely get good results.

I overcame my fear of English not through classes but by traveling every week with newly made friends and planning trips together. In particular, talking with friends over drinks on weekends was a big help.At some point, you’ll realize, “I can speak this quickly now.”
I think that depending on how you act, you can socialize with friends and experience more things.Don’t be afraid — if you speak to people first and open your heart, there will surely be good results.
# To prospective participants

I don''t think you need to be too afraid of English. I''m not good at English either, and even if you attend a language school, most of the multinational friends there aren''t very good at English.
But if you try to communicate little by little with imperfect English and make an effort to understand one another, I think you''ll naturally improve.
# Recommended leisure activities in the Philippines
On weekends, I recommend going on a city tour or visiting nearby valleys or beaches with the friends you hang out with. Spending time together helps you naturally get close and build friendships.
Also, I think approaching a friend who likes shopping and going shopping together is a really good experience. In the Philippines, snorkeling, diving, and scuba diving are popular. It can be scary at first, but if you try them with friends it will be a truly meaningful challenge.
Exercising together is also a good option, and looking for great places to eat is nice too.
