Hello. I chose a gap year during the school vacation because I wanted to feel more relaxed abroad. I also wanted to learn English and experience another country''s culture.

Before leaving, excitement outweighed worry. Until departure I was swamped with practicums and exams and couldn''t prepare much, so I left for London without much planning. This time, rather than having a specific goal for the gap year, I wanted to feel relaxed. And I returned having discovered myself feeling relaxed there.

     # I was greatly impressed by how people didn''t worry about others'' opinions.

I only took morning classes, so I attended language school from 9 to 12 and spent the rest of the time freely. Usually after class I would eat lunch with classmates in the park, drink tea, and mostly go see exhibitions at museums or galleries that I wanted to see.

At first I had lunch with one or two classmates, but as friends who came with them joined, the group grew and I ended up having lunch with more than ten people. And since it was the summer sale season, we also shopped together and enjoyed relaxed, fun times.

While hanging out with the friends I met here, I often felt impressed by how they weren''t concerned about what others thought.

A friend accompanied me from Korea, so I spent a lot of time with them, and I also exchanged culture by having lunch with classmates.

For example, there were many Brazilian and Spanish friends; on Sundays we met to watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, relaxed in Regent''s Park, experienced British culture together, and spoke a lot in English.

After classes, we would go into the British Museum and look for each other''s countries'' exhibits, explaining them to one another. We also tried foods from each country and kept interacting constantly, becoming close.

    (Accommodation)

I experienced a lot of inconvenience related to cleaning. The homestay where I stayed was occupied by a woman and her son, and the woman''s concept of hygiene was different from ours, so I sometimes felt it was a bit dirty (especially the kitchen). Because of that, I had some discomfort when cooking in the kitchen.

So I washed the dishes again before using them and wiped the table once more before eating. Still, the lady tried hard to talk with us a lot, which I appreciated.

    (Meals)

There are cheap places in the UK, but because the pound is expensive I cooked at home. In my case, I had already bought a lot of food in Korea, so I could eat well without spending much money. Still, because of the academy schedule I had to buy food once a day, so I often ate supermarket meals or burgers. Eating all three meals out is a burden, but ingredients are cheap, so even if you can''t cook well I recommend trying to cook yourself.
