Life-Changing JaegleJaegle Humanities Debate Gap Year — Review

#Changed my reading habits; broadened and expanded my way of thinking #Gained experience in debate-style discussions and teamwork #Realized that various perspectives exist on events

  •

What impressed me most was the ''plausible illusion that justice is the same as law'' introduced in the first day''s lecture. A photo lab employee, while developing a customer''s film, found photos showing drugs and a baby together and reported it to the police; the baby was safely rescued, but the photo lab employee was actually fired by the company. The reason was that the company has an obligation to protect customers'' personal information and even has a department responsible for such matters, yet the employee reported it without consulting the company, which damaged the company''s credibility. I had taken it for granted that the employee acted correctly, but after reading about the company''s position, I was surprised that different perspectives and positions could exist even in the same incident.

    - ''JaegeulJaegeul Humanities Discussion That Changes My Life'' / Choi Minje, Gap-Year Tribe, Gapper

    Reason I joined the course

I watched an EBS documentary called ''Why Do We Go to University?'' The documentary said that the educational approach of famous overseas universities, which have produced many great figures including Nobel laureates, is to read humanities books and hold discussions. For someone like me who had been educated by rote, it was a refreshing perspective. I thought that education through reading humanities and engaging in discussion could be an opportunity to change me, so while looking for related groups or lectures, I learned about the ''JaegeulJaegeul Humanities Discussion Program'' on the Korea Gap Year website and applied.

    Most memorable class content

The ''plausible illusion that justice is the same as law'' introduced in the first day''s lecture left the strongest impression.
A photo lab employee, while developing a customer''s film, found photos showing drugs and a baby together and reported it to the police; the baby was safely rescued, but the photo lab employee was actually fired by the company.

The reason was that the company has an obligation to protect customers'' personal information and even has a department in charge of such work, but the employee reported it without consulting the company, which harmed the company''s credibility. I naturally thought the employee had done the right thing, but after reading about the company''s position, different perspectives and positionsI was surprised that they could exist.

In my opinion, this course is,

Debate-style discussionan advantage. In general, in free discussion, only those who are eloquent continue to speak or people end up repeating their existing positions. However, debate-style discussion has a set order and requires you to rebut the previous speaker''s arguments, so you are prompted to consider claims you might not have thought of, which can broaden your thinking.

Also, because it is a rigorous team activity, roles suited to each person''s tendencies are assigned or you can request a team break and consult with teammates to adjust strategy; through this you can also develop teamwork.

    Changes

My reading style has changed. Before taking the class, I mainly read self-help books, but through the course I came to appreciate the value of humanities books, so these days I am reading humanities-related works.

Also, when I read newspaper articles or books, rather than simply absorbing knowledge and information, even if only briefly,my own thoughtsI have developed the habit of organizing them.

''JaegeulJaegeul Humanities Discussion'' — Who should I strongly recommend it to?

I recommend it to people who feel like they only read the words when they read books or newspapers. You will learn how to form your own thoughts. It is also recommended for people who want to read but don''t know which books to choose.

    Plans going forward

I plan to form a club with the people I met through the JaegeulJaegeul humanities discussion and continuously read and discuss humanities books together.
