Participated Gap Year program: How to wake the dormant me: challenging myself to become a musical actor!
Q.A briefPlease introduce yourself.
Hye-jin Age:33years old I''m a former officer, Until recently I served overseas with KOICA, and this yearin April,I returned to Korea..After that,
I participated in the Gap Year program during a short break while preparing for employment. Now that I''ve finished the gap year, I found a job right away and am working. Hye-seung25, I majored in vocal music. After graduating from university, while I was torn between musical theater and vocal music, I came across the Gap Year musical program and thought ''this is it,'' so I chose it.
Q.Among Korea Gap Year''s various programs,Why did you choose this program?
Hye-jin I''ve wanted to try musical theater since I was a child, but I never had the opportunity.. Actuallyuntil the moment I paid and auditioned.I worried a lot. participating in the program 3month period, I wanted to prioritize this gap year program over other things and focus on it. 33 years old, you see. I also felt sorry toward my parents.
Hyesung I really wanted to do musical theater, but the cost was very high so I couldn''t even dare to consider it, but the Korea Gap Year musical program3 months, learning musical theater and even performing on stage, I thought it was a miracle that I could do all that for that price.. I chose it because I thought it could be a stepping stone to starting musical theater.
However, the low cost rather led to doubts about its professionalism.
Q.Listening to you, it seems it wasn''t an easy choice for either of you.
Despite that, what gave you the courage to choose it?
Hyejin I worried a lot, but for myself, first of all, to startI knew that if I started, I would carry it through to the end..
By nature, if there''s something I want to try I have to try it, so I worried a lot before starting. I thought I''d do well once I started, and I pushed myself.
Hyesung To be honest, since I had already paid the deposit, I had no choice but to do it with the mindset that at worst I''d only break even. So...There wasn''t any decisive trigger; rather, activitiesI became engrossed while doing them..

Q. Interest in musicals When did you become interested?
HyejinWhen I was young, after watching a children''s musical, I had a vague thought that since I also liked dancing and singing, I wanted to try it.Then one dayI showed my parents an acting school flyer and got scolded a lot. After that, I just had thevague desireand I went on forgetting it..But then, by chance, when I saw on Facebook an ad from Korean Gap Year recruiting for a musical program, my childhood memories resurfaced and I went for it..
HyesungI originally chose my major in classical vocal studies because I wanted to do musicals..I even worked at an agency and was constantly studying and paying attention to it..
But I didn''t know how to begin, and seeing that people who had done vocal studies were also doing musicals, I enrolled in the vocal department. However,After that, I devoted myself to my major and fell for the charm of classical singing, so I forgot about musicals..It was like that, but after I graduated, I again a fork in the roadand found myself standing at a crossroads and worrying about it when I saw promotion for this program and decided to take on the challenge..
Q. How was the program''s structure and organization?
Hyejin Breathing, vocalization, We spent a lot of time on acting basics and such, so there was inevitably somewhat of a shortage of time for practical on-stage acting rehearsals.. However, it''s not that we spent a lot of time only on the basics, because those were also very important elements. Overall, timebeing insufficient was the biggest regret..
Hyesung I also thought time was insufficient, but what''s hard to argue is the fact that all the participants were non-professionals doing a musical for the first time.. So we couldn''t perfectly do both basic practice and practical rehearsal, and there were limits to how much time each person could devote to practice because of their own lives.. So rather than the system, it was more about how much the participants had passion and were willing to dedicate their time and be considerate of one another — that was the bigger and more important issue..
Q. When first encountering musicals what did you find most difficult?
HyejinAt firstactingWhen learning the basics of acting, everything was simply fun..But the more I wanted to learn about the role and dug into the details, the more acting became difficult..Wearing a costume you might only see once in a lifetime, performing a love scene with someone you''re not comfortable with, or Ihaven''t been married or had a daughter, so it was difficult to understand what emotions this character I was playing would feel..But although it''s hard to wear that kind of costume and do that kind of acting once, once I did it I just became eager to figure out how I could better bring my role to life..
Hyesung It was very difficult even to change my vocal production when singing..And ''Spring Awakening'' itself is a difficult and condensed work, and there were parts I couldn''t fully understand, so that was also hard..Only after it ended did I finally understand what kind of work it was, which made me feel more regretful..

Q. What was the happiest or most rewarding moment while taking part?
HyejinAs a properly completed production, the moment itwent up on stage.
My parents came on the day of the performance..They knew because I had told them when I was young, but they didn''t realize they''d maintain such interest; through this experience, they''ve become wonderful allies and supporters..
Also, friends came, and many of them probably saw this side of me for the first time., II was happy that it became an opportunity for my friends and for me to see a new side of myself.
Finally, even though problems are bound to occur when many people come together to work toward a single goal, we were able to successfully stage the performance, and I was really happy to have gained people who shared those memories.
Hyesung For me, more than when I went on stage on the day of the performance, the rehearsalthe moment I first went on stage for rehearsal is more memorable.
I had always been practicing in the rehearsal room thinking we would do it someday, but actually stepping onto the stage of a large theater in Daehangno, wearing a microphone and receiving the lights made it feel real, and I thought, ''I''ve come this far.''.
Also, whenever I met with the friends I prepared with, I realized we weren''t talking about trivial everyday things or gossip, but were always talking about each other''s acting and our work, and sometimes I felt like a real actor..
Q.Among the people you were with during your gap year, please tell us about the person who was most memorable.
HyejinHyesung and Hyeil, who were beside me. All three of us have the character ''Hye'' in our names,Hye Sisterswe named ourselves that and stuck together.Even though there was a big age gap, I''m so proud to have met friends who would meet before practice, make time to practice, and whom I could open up to.
Hyesung 17year-old high school student.. For me, 8I couldn''t understand what someone eight years younger was thinking..
She was the counterpart to my role whom I had to match with, and we often had problems communicating.. Through that process the breadth of understandinghas broadened. At times my previously unfinished self was reflected, and I could also see and learn how others perceive this child..
Q.the program''s What are the pros and cons?
Hyejin ConsI don''t think there are any.. Rather than a drawback, a disappointing point was that because we were not professional actors, we couldn''t adjust individual schedules, so people often missed rehearsals.
ProsThat we socialized with many people of different ages and completed a single production.. Also, that we were able to have a special experience we wouldn''t have had otherwise..
Hyesung The biggest advantage is that I got to do this in my life. Performing a musical in a hall in Daehangno 경험that I had.
And another methat I met. I often found myself thinking, ''I had this side to me as well.''. In fact, as someone with a related major I was confident, but I realized I also had these small weaknesses..
Q. If you were to describe the program?
Hyejin ‘challenge’I think it is.. I only had the simple thought of wanting to try it, but Korea Gapyear''s musical program was the challenge that made me actually carry it out..
Hyesung The piece we performed was titled ''Spring Awakening'' (Awakened Spring)and it''s exactly as the title suggests.. comfortablespringIt was the moment when the calm life that had only felt like a comfortable spring was shattered..
Q.Musical program,Recommended for these people!?
HyejinI wanted to be on stage, If you were someone who wanted to try musical theater, you might be able to unleash that passion..
Or for someone who wants to let go of themselves and bring out another side of themselves..
Hyesung Someone who has time and passion. And someone who needs something to be fully immersed in right now..
Q. When comparing before and after having a gap year, have there been any changes?
Hyejin To be honest, I thought that with just this one program the musical part of my life would beoverI thought it would be.. But now a hobbyit has become something I want to continue with in the future, even as. I kept telling people around me that this performance would be my first and last,, Right now, I actually feel like I''ve briefly returned to everyday life and am working..
HyeseungYou said you were at a crossroads where you had to choose between two options., one thing to chooseIt was a really great opportunity that made that possible..
If, If I hadn''t done this program until now only in my headI would have only been worrying about it..
Q.I''m curious about your future plans.
