#Living my life true to myself instead of worrying about others. #A heart for sharing learned with the children. #I felt happy and healed while spending time with the kids.
Hello, my name is Ha Young-seop, and I participated in a volunteer teaching program in Vietnam after a language study in the Philippines. I didn’t know much about gap years at first but learned about them by chance when I met the owner, who helped me a lot, allowing me to have a meaningful time. After graduating from graduate school, I was struggling with burnout, and I thought I needed some time to rest through a gap year program and that it would help with my major.
I have lived away from home in Korea, so I wasn’t worried about the change in environment while staying abroad for a long time. I prepared for my departure in the order recommended by the gap year program. I felt safe living in a good environment in the city. I think doing some research and image training beforehand would help as well.
The volunteer work in Vietnam was conducted in the morning and afternoon at a kindergarten. I met the kids to teach them Korean and helped with table manners during lunchtime. Being with the kids helped me heal personally, and I felt their innocence deeply. It motivated me a lot as I dream of becoming a teacher, and I learned to share with the kids.
On my days off, I mostly went out traveling and having fun. I enjoy healing and having new experiences, and I like to go wherever my feet take me. I made many new friends from abroad while meeting other volunteers and local friends in Vietnam, which really broadened my view of the world.
I would rate this experience a perfect 10 for changing my life. It was the time I lived the most authentically, and while I had many worries and felt lost about my life direction, it was a fun and very helpful time. After participating, I feel like I can live more authentically without worrying about what others think and that my heart is more at ease. If you are struggling with burnout or want to find the meaning of life, I think it’s important to take time through a gap year project and approach people first. Again, thank you to the owner and the staff who cared for me and showed me interest.
