#I became friendly with people other than Koreans. #Experience in caring for hospital patients. #I had a great time filled with medical volunteer work in Ho Chi Minh.
Hello. I am Yeom Tae-bin, a nursing student at Gangseo University in Korea. I participated in a medical volunteer project in Ho Chi Minh City with the goal of looking back and feeling that I had a valuable time. Instead of the usual overseas travels during breaks, I chose a gap year project because I thought I would feel it was worthwhile and also be able to travel.
I was worried about staying overseas for a long time, but I was also very excited. While in Ho Chi Minh, I was most worried about getting sick, so I prepared all kinds of medicine. I didn't feel any danger there, and I felt safe.
One day I started with breakfast at 7 a.m. After that, I headed to the hospital for volunteer work from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., then returned to eat lunch at my lodging. Later, I returned to the hospital at 1 p.m. and worked until 3:30 p.m.
As a nursing student, I was able to get some hands-on experience with patient care before starting my official hospital practice. I felt I got much closer to the hospital staff than expected and even received a coffee gift on my last day. I realized that even with language barriers, people can connect and that even abroad, it is a place where people live and can become friends.
I met a 16-year-old Japanese girl who came for medical volunteering, and we became friends while hanging out together during our free time. I had fun, and I want to recommend Mount Baden as a travel spot I discovered. I feel like I’m more comfortable connecting with people from other countries now.
I think this project helped change my life to about an 8 out of 10. The experiences and lessons were valuable, and I had a great time. I think future participants won’t need to worry too much. Thank you for giving me a good experience.
