#Acceptance of a more relaxed life, value-centered thinking #Diverse happiness, experience of social impact #Sense of life direction, authenticity in communication

Even when language didn’t connect, we communicated with gestures and looks I felt that sincerity comes through in the process of working up a sweat together to sort and share food. In contributing to solving concrete social problems like food waste and poverty the real sense of making a practical contribution was special, I gained the conviction that even one person’s actions can change the world a little.
Unlike in Korea, where I always lived busily, I learned how to embrace leisure, and the life I want is ''not being alone but together'' — a life of understanding and putting things into practice.

#I wanted to collaborate with participants of various nationalities and experience cultural diversity.

Hello! I’m Oh Yujin, who experienced the summer in Lisbon. I wanted a deep experience that would help the local community rather than a simple trip. I was especially interested in the issues of ''food waste'' and ''urban poverty'', so I participated in the Lisbon volunteer program.
It was also appealing that I could experience cultural diversity by working with participants from various nationalities. Above all, the spirit of challenge — wanting to test myself in a new environment — drove me.
*For Oh Yujin, who wanted activities that make tangible change, we recommended a Portugal Lisbon gap year that can contribute to the local community! If you want a customized plan on where and how to start making change, we strongly recommend a 1:1 consultation with a gap year specialist!
A sure way to change my life: gap year 1:1 consulting
#I wanted to broaden my perspective and the way I view life.
.png)
Through this gap year, I wanted to change my outlook on myself and the way I view lifeBy stepping out of a familiar environment and living in a completely different culture and society, I wanted to realize how limited my values were.
Also, by directly participating in social issues, I wanted to create an opportunity to deeply consider my career and life direction. Through the experience of living with others rather than a simple trip, I wanted to become someone who understands the wider world and takes action.
#I felt that I was contributing to the practical solution of social problems

I enjoyed the experience of cooperating with people from different backgrounds toward a single goal. When language didn’t connect, we communicated with gestures and looks, and had lively yet earnest conversations about our different cultures and backgrounds. In the process of working up a sweat together to sort and share food, I personally felt that sincerity comes through.
I particularly felt that I was contributing to solving concrete social problems like ''food waste'' and ''poverty'', not just doing simple ''volunteering''. The small conviction that ''even my single action can change the world a little'' made this time special. This experience will likely become a touchstone that leads me to make value-centered choices no matter what I do in the future.
#I’m keeping in touch with friends I became close with in Lisbon, and we’ve promised to meet soon in Korea.
.png)
When I first arrived, I was a bit taken aback because there were only three East Asians including me. But other foreign friends who stayed at the accommodation approached me first, and we quickly became close. I became especially close with friends from Germany; except for sleeping time we were almost always together, so we bonded quickly.I’m still in contact with the friends I made here. One of them is coming to Korea this time, and we’ve even promised to spend time together in Korea.
Also, while volunteering I became close with some beneficiary families from Ukraine and was even invited to their home.I was able to make many really good foreign friends.
#There are various kinds of happiness in the world, and I learned to accept moments of ease as they are.
.png)
In fact, in Korea I felt like I was always busy, as if being chased by something. I used to feel anxious if I wasn''t doing anything and constantly compared myself to others, but through the Gap Year project I learned that there are truly many different ways of living and, accordingly, many different forms of happiness. I also think I learned how to accept leisure as it is.
The Gap Year pulled me out into a wider world and, at the same time, made me look more deeply into myself. This volunteering experience left an important clue about which direction I should take going forward. In Lisbon I learned that the life I want is one of ‘together rather than alone,’ and a life of ‘understanding and taking action.’
#Portugal Lisbon Volunteering — here’s my daily routine!
.png)
I was assigned to an afternoon shift. The activities mainly involved going around the city with other volunteers to collect surplus/expiring food and then delivering it to people who needed it. Until the evening,During my free time I usually went with the other international volunteers to the beach in front of the accommodation to relax, and went into Lisbon to sightsee. On weekends we also took trips to nearby areas around Lisbon.
#My tips for preparing for volunteering in Lisbon, Portugal!
.png)
I went to Portugal in the height of summer. It was hot during the day, but windy and chilly at night. So returning to the accommodation late after volunteering felt cold; I recommend bringing a thin hoodie or a blanket.
Overall matched My coordinator kept in touch in advance, informed me about my current situation and the preparations before the project, and took care of everything very thoroughly with an approximately one-hour online meeting before departure, so preparing was easy.
