For Africa's Bright Future! Tanzania Zanzibar Child Education Project

#A life-changing turning point; broadened global perspective #A sense of reward and accomplishment, warm experiences #The importance of emotional connection

  •

It was truly a brilliant experience.

At first, I simply wanted to share my experiences and abilities with the children,

In reality, I was even more moved by the children''s pure enthusiasm and warm hearts.

I could fully feel their care and consideration for one another.

The gap year became a turning point in my life.

If you''re unsure, I definitely recommend going.

For Africa''s bright future! Tanzania Zanzibar Child Education Project

    # I applied for the Tanzania gap year because I wanted to do meaningful volunteer work before starting my professional life!

Hello! I''m Lee Do-young, and I participated in child education volunteer work in Tanzania! I applied because I wanted to do meaningful volunteer work after graduating and before starting work. Previously, tooI was very interested in educational volunteering and had experience volunteering at a welfare center, so I was naturally drawn to this project as well.

When I first heard about ''volunteering in Africa'' only by word of mouth, I didn''t know what the reality of Africa was like.I simply wanted to share my experiences and abilities with the children and thought it would be nice if I could help them even a little, so I applied.

*Mr. Lee Do-young, who was very interested in educational volunteering, chose and participated in a project where he could stay with the children in Africa and also soothe his own heart. Being so interested, Mr. Lee Do-young decided on and joined a project in Africa that would allow him to be with the children and comfort his own heart. If you want to know where and how it''s best to start making changes and want a tailored plan, I highly recommend 1:1 consulting with a gap year professional consultant!

    # I wanted to have even a small positive impact on the lives of African children.

Rather than my own change, the goal of the gap year was actually to have even a small positive impact on the lives of African children.

    # I was happy to be able to be with African children and felt a great sense of fulfillment.

I felt rewarded in that I was actually able to have a positive impact on the children through the project. I was moved by the children''s pure kindness, and also touched by the warm greetings from the local people. In addition, I received a lot of help from the local coordinator leaders through the project.

And through this experience,I realized how important the environment is for the children. I could see the children''s passion for learning, but there were many times my heart ached seeing children living in lacking conditions.

    # I recommend getting familiar with English first!

There were exactly two difficulties I experienced while doing the Tanzania gap year.First, my English communication skills were somewhat lacking, so deep conversations were difficult. Fortunately, basic English communication was possible, so it didn''t greatly interfere with the volunteering. Second, my body had some trouble, perhaps because the food didn''t agree with me. However, taking the antidiarrheal medicine I had brought in advance seemed to help a bit.

Therefore, I think it''s important to pack emergency medications like antidiarrheals well. And I recommend making some effort to improve English communication. It would allow for deeper conversations with the people around you and be good for sharing more experiences with the children.

    # Even if communication wasn''t great, I could fully feel the love and consideration we had for each other.

I think the Africa volunteer trip I took as my last activity before starting work was a shining experience both for me and for the African children. While making dolls with the children using the teddy-bear making kit I brought from Korea I could feel the pure enthusiasm of the children, and even if we couldn''t communicate well, feeling the care and consideration we showed each other was a great happiness for me.

    # What is a daily schedule like for Tanzania child education volunteer work?

We departed with colleagues in the lead vehicle at 8 a.m. Usually we volunteered for four hours starting at 8 a.m., then returned to the accommodation to eat lunch and rest. On weekday evenings we sometimes went together to a Stone Town restaurant to eat pizza, and we also had relaxing time at the beach.

If you have free time while volunteering, I recommend traveling around Tanzania. In Stone Town you can enjoy sights such as Freddie Mercury''s birthplace and ''Welcome to Zanzibar'' diving. On weekends there were no volunteer schedules, so we could take day trips to see wildlife like the Mikumi Safari Daytrip, which was a truly amazing and wonderful experience. It was also nice to travel with other volunteers to beaches like Paje. And although I couldn''t go myself, I heard Nungwi Beach is really beautiful, so I recommend it for your travel route!

    # My Tanzania child education volunteer preparation TIP!

The Gap Year teacher contacted me and explained things well, so preparing before departure wasn''t difficult. The steps were clearly listed on the Gap Year site, so I prepared them in order.

    Experience ★★★★★

: If you''re unsure, I definitely recommend going! It''s a new experience and could be a turning point in your life.

    Learning ★★★★★

: Through volunteering I, too, was able to feel and learn many things about life.

    Environment ★★★

: The food, hygiene, and educational environment were somewhat poor, but I think this too is part of the African experience.

    Safety ★★★★★

: I don''t know the local safety in detail, but I felt Zanzibar was safe enough that you don''t need to worry much about security when walking around at night.

    Leisure ★★★★

: Besides volunteer hours, there were leisure opportunities like beach or safari trips, so leisure was good. I wish we had known in advance about rest weeks like Culture Week.
