It may be impossible for a life I''ve lived for over 20 years to change in just one year, but This gap year helped me reestablish the direction and overall framework of my life. I want to try living more comfortably and enjoyably along that newly established path :)

Recharging warm love with children in Hanoi, Vietnam

    Review by gapper Jeong Ji-won

    # Hello! After language study abroad, I spent my second gap year in Hanoi.

Hello. I''m Jeong Ji-won, and I completed a volunteer program in Vietnam following my language study abroad.

I had difficulty expressing myself and didn''t have much experience receiving expressions of love or positive emotions. So I was recommended a program that would fulfill those needs and decided to join this Hanoi volunteer project.

Because I had already spent six months abroad before going to Hanoi, I had no worries about staying overseas for a long time; rather, I started with curiosity and excitement about what life in Hanoi would be like and what Vietnamese people and culture would be like.

    * Because Jeong Ji-won wanted to express love and positive emotions, she needed an environment where she could care for herself and receive abundant love.We recommended a Vietnam gap year through personalized gap-year consulting :) Want a customized plan tailored to your situation? We highly recommend 1:1 consulting with a gap-year specialist!

The sure way to change my life: gap year 1:1 consulting

    # I wanted to feel firsthand what the emotion called love feels like and its sincere warmth.

Through this Hanoi gap year, I wanted to experience ''being loved.'' I wanted to feel firsthand what love feels like, that sincere warmth.

Above all, I wanted to let go of the fear of honestly expressing ''I like it, I don''t like it'' and gain the freedom to show myself as I am..And additionally, I wanted to practice developing a mindset of enjoying things.

    # When I''m with the children, my hardships melted away like snow!

I taught Korean to 5-6-year-old children at a Hanoi kindergarten. When the children learned Korean and would say the words or greetings they had learned to me in Korean, I felt extremely proud, happy, and grateful..

I mainlyI volunteered mostly in the toddler class; although the children were so young they didn''t even know Vietnamese, when emotional connections formed and after some time they recognized and welcomed me, I felt truly joyful and happy. And when I taught English in the toddler class, it was really hard—teaching as if shouting into the void—but on days when the children were in a good mood and mimicked me in imperfect pronunciation, I felt the accumulated difficulties melt away, and it was joyful.

    # Meeting friends of various nationalities broadened my outlook on life.

I was truly grateful that the friends I lived with at the accommodation were all European volunteers, so I could learn many good things. Even without money or education, seeing them be satisfied with their lives and truly enjoy living was something I envied, and it made me think I should live with that mindset.

And As we lived together, I too gradually changed in that way, and I could feel my head and heart becoming lighter..And in the evenings we would all gather to have dinner and chat for about two hours, and I was surprised that this was so natural for them.

In our country, times to eat together and have conversations have largely disappeared, but these friends place great importance on this and often try to meet like this, which I really liked. Having this experience made me realize how important it is to have such time with family.

Actually, I could communicate with my friends in English, but not well, so I often hit limits, and those moments felt the most disappointing.I wanted to communicate more and spend time with the European friends, but it''s a bit regrettable that because I didn''t understand well and speaking was difficult, I couldn''t socialize more.

Although it''s volunteer work in Vietnam, personally I thought it was a project where English was important.English isn''t used much in the volunteering itself, but it''s important in all aspects outside of the volunteering, so please take this into account and I hope you''ll open your heart and take on the challenge. You''ll definitely gain and feel a lot. Of course, it would be even better if you have the confidence to break through all of this!

    # I have gained a lot of confidence in life and can feel that my mind has become stronger.

I have gained a lot of confidence in life and can feel that my mind has become stronger. And thanks to the friends I spent time with during this project, I learned how to enjoy my life and how to respect others while keeping my boundaries, so life feels a bit easier. And above all, English became fun and I wanted to study it.

After finishing the gap year and returning to Korea, it feels like I''ve grown a lot but also that there aren''t any major changes; it''s like there are no big changes, yet I also feel I''ve grown quite a bit. It''s impossible for my life of over 20 years to change in just one year, but this gap year served to redefine the direction and the big framework of my life. I want to live more comfortably and enjoyably along that redefined path :)

    # What does a day of volunteering in Hanoi, Vietnam look like?

The project ran on a regular schedule from Monday to Thursday, Fridays were optional, and weekends were free rest time. Volunteering was divided into two shifts, morning and afternoon: the morning was from 8:30 to 10:45, and the afternoon from 2:45 to 4:30. The remaining time was personal free time.

In the morning, when we arrived at the kindergarten, we first had about a 15-minute simple movement/song time with the children, then we dispersed to our assigned classes to assist with lessons or to directly conduct English or Korean classes. After that we helped the children with lunch and finished for the morning. In the afternoon, upon arrival we would first help with the children''s meals, then teach English or Korean classes or assist with other lessons before finishing for the day.

It was inexpensive to travel from Hanoi to other parts of Vietnam, so I often went to Nha Trang or Da Nang. It''s cheaper than going from Korea, and since you have plenty of free time on Fri–Sun, I recommend traveling to other regions!

    # My tips for preparing for volunteering in Hanoi, Vietnam!

Because I was moving from Malta to Vietnam, there wasn''t much to prepare before departure. I just prepared the plane ticket and visa and checked the things to be careful about during transit before leaving.

    # My volunteer gap year working with children in Hanoi, Vietnam is!

    Experience ★★★★★

: I was glad because I could have many diverse and new experiences that I wouldn''t have had if I had only stayed in Korea.

    Learning ★★★★★

: This project offered so many things to learn and feel both during the volunteer work and beyond it, so I''m very grateful.

    Environment ★★★★

: The air in Hanoi is different compared to Korea''s, and since I was constantly with the children I caught a cold once and couldn''t fully recover, which was unfortunate.

    Safety ★★★★

: It''s safe! I never felt threatened at all. However, you should always be careful wherever you are.

    Leisure ★★★★

: There was plenty of free time, so it was great for traveling and going out. Also, the cost of living is low, making it easy to travel to other areas.
