For Africa''s bright future! Child education volunteer work in Zanzibar, Tanzania
"They were the brightest moments of my twenties!"
🌍 A Tanzania journey begun with a small flutter of excitement
Hello :) I''m participant Anna Hyun! I was living busy days as a variety show PD, and one day I suddenly wanted to give a small helping hand to African children, so I joined an educational volunteer program in Tanzania. At first I strongly felt, "I should help these children!" but when I actually met them, they were already shining just as they were. It felt more like they became friends to me. Through this experience I gained a deep realization that I needed to re-examine the way I view myself and the world.
🧑🤝🧑 A new day discovered in slower time
Thinking back to a typical day in Tanzania, I woke up at 7:30, got picked up at 8 and headed to school. The school was very short on teachers. My role was to help the children copy what was on the blackboard. The children loved doing dictation and having me check it. It was painful to see that many had no textbooks. So I drew timetables for the kids by hand and promised, "It''s a promise—tomorrow we''ll definitely bring textbooks!" The moment a single sheet of paper made their eyes sparkle, I couldn''t help but smile with them.
🌱 A farewell I didn''t want to miss
The children were so clear and pure. They opened their hearts quickly, and I felt as if I were a student attending the same school with them.
On the final day of volunteering, I packed small trinkets to give the children. But a situation arose and I had to leave earlier than expected. Following a friend''s advice I tried to hide my sadness, but seeing the children''s eyes as they said goodbye overwhelmed me. Regret and pride washed over me at the same time, and I could sense how special a memory this would remain in my life.
🖼️ A warm scene that remains in a corner of my heart
I returned to Korea and went back to my busy routine, but sometimes the Tanzanian sunshine and the children''s laughter suddenly come to mind. The question "What am I doing right now?" naturally followed. So I pull out the photos from that time and recall the brightest moments of my twenties. Even now, in a corner of my heart, the warm times there quietly live on.
