#Reduced fear, shifts in medical values #Nursing skills, life lessons #Sense of meaning, continuous communication

Medical actions, even volunteer work, don''t automatically carry meaning just by being performed. The value of what I do seems to be determined by the meaning I give and create while performing it. And I realized that to create and not lose that meaning, affection for patients, rapport, and constant communication are necessary.

# I wanted to take a break through new experiences and envision my future.

Hello! I am a nursing student who took a leave of absence after finishing my third year.
I wanted to use my leave to take time to rethink my dreams.Becoming a nurse was my long-time dream, but reality was very different from what I had imagined, and I experienced burnout, so I felt like I had lost my dream and was lost. So,I applied to spend a gap year to take time to think about what I really want and how to shape my future.
* Needing new and positive stimulation in her lethargic daily life, Lee Joo-hee decided to participate in a volunteer activity related to her major to achieve a new accomplishment!Want to know the best way to make a change or get a customized plan? We highly recommend 1:1 consulting with a gap year specialist!

# I was able to achieve three goals through my gap year!

I set three goals for myself to make my gap year special!
1. Take time to think deeply about my dream
2. Get to know myself and love myself more
3. Become someone who can enjoy each moment
Unlike other volunteer activities, I think the best thing about a gap year is that you can create your own story!
I felt like I accomplished it entirely on my own from start to finish.(Of course, while carrying out the project there were staff from the organization who helped, and roommates and friends I met locally, so my story wasn''t just mine anymore.)I am so grateful that I achieved all three of my goals :)
# I hope you spend a precious time creating your own story!

I was happy to meet and interact with many different people while volunteering. I had brief conversations with local teachers and other foreign volunteers about their perspectives on work, and providing direct patient care (clinical skills) was a good opportunity to rethink the profession of nursing.Above all, thanks to the Cambodian people who greeted me with silent smiles whenever our eyes met, I was able to feel and learn a lot. haha
Of course, when I first went to the ward during the first week it was a bit hard to adapt, hehe. In the department I was assigned to there wasn''t a single nursing volunteer. Still If you, in simple English, timidly-but-actively say what you can do or that you want to help, they will also timidly-but-actively let you know and help you, so I think I was able to manage well at the hospital!

Actually, I didn''t have a roommate in the first week, hehe. Still, the local staff took such good care of me that I''m still in touch with them. From the second week, Korean roommates started to arrive one by one and we made a lot of good memories together. I also met foreign volunteers at the hospital little by little; we introduced friends to each other and went out together!
Depending on when you participate and the local situation, the atmosphere may differ from the reviews! So even if things are different from what you expected, don''t be too flustered or disappointed — have a good time creating your own story. And if you end up having time alone, don''t avoid it; use that time as a stepping stone for growth!
# I tried not to be intimidated like before, and above all, to keep smiling :)

After the gap year, I can''t say that fear has completely disappeared, but I definitely feel that the degree and threshold of fear toward an uncertain future have changed. Now I have a bit more composure, and even if I''m not good at something I don''t seem to get intimidated like before. Above all, I''m trying to keep smiling :)

Also, I think I have rethought my values regarding healthcare.
What kind of medical volunteering did I want to do? Isn''t volunteering not about doing grand things, but about offering what you can do without expecting anything in return?

The hospital, which used to feel suffocating to me, has now become a comfortable and enjoyable place!
It was truly enjoyable and fulfilling to challenge myself with new procedures here :)
# Cambodia medical volunteer work — here''s my daily routine!

I worked from 8:00 to 3:30. (I thought I only had to work mornings but that wasn''t my department; still, the afternoons were relaxed so it wasn''t hard at all.) I took a tuk-tuk to get to work by 8, and if I worked hard and happily doing what I could with the local staff, before I knew it it was time to leave, hehe. After that I''d relax in the room chatting with my roommates, go look around the market, or go out with foreign friends. On the weekend I also visited Angkor Wat!
# My Cambodian overseas medical volunteer gap year is!

Experience ★★★★
: Nursing procedure experiences you can''t get in Korea + experiences of living alone in a foreign place :)
Learning ★★★★★
: If the learning you want is nursing knowledge, you''ll have to study more on your own after work, but aside from that there were many lessons about life, living, and the attitude of a healthcare professional.
Environment★★★★
: I was satisfied because they adapt well to any environment without discomfort!
Safety★★★★
: I think it would be fine as long as you don''t go out late and don''t go alone!
Leisure ★★★★★
: There is plenty of free time after work and on weekends, so it''s great to make use of.
