Protecting nature with my own hands! Iceland environmental protection volunteer program
"I learned about life while immersed in nature."
🌍 Why I joined the Iceland environmental volunteer program
Hello :) I''m a university student majoring in geography, and because I''m especially interested in physical geography I took part in an Iceland environmental protection volunteer program. It was my first time going abroad alone so I felt nervous, but the gap year system was a great help by guiding me step by step through departure preparations and what was needed for the program.
🧑🤝🧑 Interacting with people of various nationalities
The camp included 25 participants from various countries, including Europe and Mexico. Because we all shared a commitment to environmental protection, we bonded easily. In addition to volunteer work, workshops on Icelandic forests, myths and elf stories, plants, and animals were held, giving us the chance to learn more about Iceland.
🧹 Main volunteer activities
Main activities included beach cleanups, sorting trash, visiting a recycling center, and attending classes. The beach cleanup was tough but the most enjoyable activity — while picking up trash we even saw animals like seals, sheep, and horses, which was fascinating.
♻️ Environmentally friendly eating habits
The organization I volunteered with was an environmental group that encouraged not wasting food. Wondering how we could avoid leaving food uneaten, my friends and I created a "random box game" to share food, which made for a fun experience.
🌱 Recommendation for gap year activities
It was a healing time in the great outdoors, and talking with diverse people eased the burdens of life. I recommend this to people who love nature, and I plan to gain more overseas experiences in the future, meet friends abroad, and build a variety of experiences.
