Where you can see the most beautiful sunset in the world
A relaxing volunteer trip in Bali, Indonesia
"I realized that there are many kinds of jobs in the world that I hadn''t thought about,
and I want to try more varied experiences to find a career path that suits me!"
# Why I decided to go on the Bali volunteer trip
Before entering university, while spending a dull period of time, I decided to take a gap year for a new experience. After preparing for college entrance exams at a specialized high school and becoming exhausted by fierce competition, I had a strong desire to go somewhere where no one knew me, and after looking at gap year programs I chose Bali.
# Interaction and mentoring with local residents
Before the program started, during English mentoring sessions I talked with local residents in English and communicated by writing together. I also took part in various activities that used the locals'' expertise, such as snorkeling, basket weaving, and making coconut oil, experiencing the local culture firsthand. There''s also an episode where I ate the leftover residue from making coconut oil and had an upset stomach for two days.
# Volunteer English teaching activities
I volunteered to teach English at local elementary and middle schools. At first it was awkward because of the language barrier, but as I taught English and listened to the students'' stories we naturally grew closer. The board games and snacks I brought from Korea were especially popular with the students. The kids knew the Korean drama Squid Game, so we all played "Red Light, Green Light" together and became even closer. On the last day of class, I have a touching memory of a girl giving me a rabbit stuffed toy as a gift.
# Weekend activities and love of snorkeling
On weekends, I spent time busily—going to see dolphins with American university students, eating at restaurants, and participating in trash-picking volunteer activities. I was especially hooked on snorkeling and enjoyed snorkeling almost every day whenever I had time. Just seeing the many colorful fish was fun and I lost track of time.
# Meeting people of various nationalities
In Bali I met and interacted with people of various nationalities, such as American university students, a woman from Mexico, and a photographer from Estonia. The Estonian photographer even showed photos he had taken while traveling. Until now I thought a job was simply sitting at a desk in an office, but I realized you can work while traveling the world like this, and I plan to try more of the things I''m interested in to broaden my worldview.
# In one word, the Bali volunteer trip was "a challenge"
By meeting new people and talking with them I learned a lot and naturally started thinking about my dreams. After the volunteer trip I gained the confidence of "I can do anything, I can go anywhere," and my belief in myself grew stronger. I also gained the courage to take on new experiences without hesitation.
For me, the gap year was my first trip; everything was new, and because there were many things I had to do on my own, I want to call it a "challenge." Through that challenge I gained courage and confidence, and I was able to enjoy happiness.
