#Gave up perfectionism and found my true self #An experience of removing the mask and having time solely for myself #Felt confidence in myself and a sense of pride

The time I spent in Malta, after the stress I''d built up from working exploded, was absolutely amazing! Having spent so long seeing the world with a narrow view, when I relaxed in a new place...I myself... I realized I don''t have to be perfect at everything, and it became a time to properly rethink the direction of my life!

# The stress accumulated while working finally burst, so I quit my job and took a gap year.
Hello, I''m Sangmi Lee. By Korean age I was taking on a gap year at a late age. But age is just a number!
The reason I took a gap year is that I started working right after graduating university and lived my working life being swayed by the atmosphere of Korean society. Because of that I couldn''t have my own time, and after working for a long time I reached a state worse than mere boredom. The self-loathing and stress about my job that had been building up exploded, and feeling that if I continued like that I might die, I quit my job and took a gap year.
* For Ms. Sangmi Lee, who wanted sufficient rest and to properly set the direction of her life going forward...Activities that allow space and relaxation, tailored 1:1 personal missions for new experiences and life planning were provided daily, and a gap-year notebook to reflect on oneself and make plans was also provided.
# I joined the Malta language-study project to have a variety of experiences in a wider world!
While I was struggling with work issues, multiple gap-year consultations helped me gradually find direction in my life,so I decided to take part in the Malta language-study project to experience a broader world.
Of course I was worried about staying abroad for a long time, but I think it''s natural for anyone to feel anxious when going somewhere new. Still, I believe there''s no need to worry too much since foreign countries are just places where the same kinds of people live! :)
Pre-departure preparation is much easier if you work through the reference materials the gap-year staff send you step by step. I''m the type who worries a lot, so I asked about even trivial things, and they replied to every single question — I''m really grateful. I think preparing from the reference materials alone is sufficient.
# During my time in Malta I wanted to find my true self!!
What I wanted to change through a gap year in Malta was to break the mask I put on as I was shaped by society and discover my true self!To be honest, I didn''t even know what kind of person I was.
And learning how to let go instead of always compulsively trying to fill things, and having time just for myself — not for others — were things I wanted to achieve during this Malta language program!
One of the good things about going to the Malta language-study project through the gap-year program was receiving the daily missions from the gap-year coordinators. Getting a daily mission creates a certain degree of structure, so I tried things I wouldn''t normally attempt, and through that I learned and realized many things. Over time those became valuable experiences!
Comparing before and after participating in the Malta language-study project: I gained confidence in myself. Before, I couldn''t even trust myself, but seeing how well I adapted made me very proud. I also learned that nothing has to be perfect, and that striving for perfection only causes me harm.
*What is a gap-year mission? It''s a special program provided so that gap-year project participants can spend their gap year in a more special and meaningful way.>> Participation fee 100 won! Go to the gap-year mission
What does a day look like in the Malta language-study project?
On weekday mornings I always receive a gap year mission. I check that day''s mission and then go to the local language school in Malta on time. The school mainly has morning classes, but if you add extra classes the finishing time changes. After school ends, the rest of the day is free time.
Of course, it''s good to keep the gap year mission in mind. Learning English is great, but it''s also important as an opportunity to properly set the direction of your life! Some missions can be done quickly, while others require a long time, so it varies. In my case I needed to allocate more time for missions, but because I had many gaps in my studying I tended to put more emphasis on studying than on missions. Later I even got confused about priorities, so I recommend studying to some extent beforehand!
My personal spot I discovered while staying in Malta!
I like hanging out with friends, but I especially like being outside alone. If you want some alone time that isn''t about swimming, after classes walk down toward the ferry terminal. At the end, instead of going through the tunnel to catch the ferry, go straight onto the road and follow the left road; if you walk absentmindedly you might pass it. After about 3–5 minutes you''ll see stairs on the right going down.
If I describe it like this you obviously won''t know where it is, but that place was my favorite spot.I went there whenever I needed time alone. I would play music there and sometimes dip my feet in the water! If you join the Malta language study project, take a screenshot of this and try going there as is, haha. Always pay attention to your safety!!
My Malta language-study tips!

- Language
: Malta''s official language is English, and after participating in the Malta language program my English improved in daily conversation and I also feel my travel English improved. Since language programs divide classes by level, you don''t need to worry much! My advice for using English is to know common basic words. For example, I think it''s good to know the names of ingredients used in restaurants beforehand!
- Accommodation
: I stayed in accommodation provided by the local Malta language school. If there is a problem with the accommodation, the school seems to change it if you request it.
- Meals
: At first I bought meals, but later I often cooked myself. So I think it would be good to know how to make a few Korean dishes!
- Things to bring
: I didn''t pack anything special, so there wasn''t anything I was particularly inconvenienced by. After all, it''s a place where people live, so you can buy things if you need them. One recommendation: if you participate in the winter season I strongly recommend bringing a small electric heating pad!It was really useful when the weather was cold!!
My gap year is
Experience★★★★★
: Coming to Malta itself was a big act of courage. So I deliberately tried to have a variety of experiences.
Learning★★★★
: I think I learned the most in the first month. I studied lots of words and daily conversation to get by. But I couldn''t miss experiencing beautiful Malta!
Environment★★★★
Safety ★★★★★
: It''s really safe! Especially in the summer, there were many people out late at night, so it felt fine!
Leisure ★★★★★
: I really love swimming; I regretted not being able to because I went in winter, but I was able to enjoy each day leisurely and take time to reflect on myself and plan for the future.
