Gilding refers to the process of applying gold leaf to wooden furniture for use in interior decoration such as ornaments and furniture. In this class you will learn Italian gilding styles. Participants will learn the basics of gilding techniques using materials such as 22-carat gold leaf, Dutch metal leaf, and silver leaf. You will also learn how to use different sizes of gold during the gilding process, finishing oxidation, color matching, and decorative techniques for antiquing gilded surfaces.

    Artwork Restoration Course

This course runs Monday to Friday (5 days a week), 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM (4 hours).

You will learn how to use solutions needed to restore smoke-damaged or aged oil paintings, and techniques to integrate and preserve canvases and paint so they do not separate. Fresco

This course runs Monday to Friday (5 days a week), 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

※ For the fresco course there is a price difference, so please contact Korea Gap Year separately. (koreagapyear@gmail.com)

Fresco is the technique used to paint murals, in which the paint soaks into the surface and, as the wall dries, the painting becomes part of the wall. After studying basic information on the chemical and physical properties of lime plaster, participants learn how to create sample panels using fresco painting and sgraffito techniques. Sgraffito is also a Western architectural method that creates forms by incising lines before the coating dries. This course is useful for those who want to learn the practical aspects of fresco, a historically important medium.

※ This project offers one-on-one private lessons.

Participants from beginner to intermediate and advanced levels can join depending on their abilities. If you wish to take private lessons, please contact Korea Gap Year (KakaoTalk @GapYear, email koreagapyear@gmail.com).

    About the Provider

The Florence art studio where this project is being carried out is specialized in traditional Italian art and in creating the finest artisan works. The designer here continues to pursue external artistic activities and is recognized for their work—so much so that they have received a design commission from luxury brand Ferragamo to work on scarf designs. In the artisans' workshops, furniture and accessories decorated with hand-painting, plating, and frame-art techniques are used in the interior design of homes, restaurants, and galleries in Florence.

    Accommodation

Participants can freely choose accommodation within the Florence area of the internship location according to their personal preferences and budget.

For project participants who have difficulty finding accommodation,Korea Gap Year will recommend accommodations (guesthouses/hotels, etc.) near the internship location.

    1. Homestay

A homestay is accommodation where an international student lives with an ordinary family in the host country and can learn the country’s culture and language. By living with the family and communicating with them, students can improve their language skills and gain an understanding of the local lifestyle, values, and cultural practices.

    2. Guesthouse

A guesthouse is a type of accommodation where the kitchen, bathroom, and shower facilities are shared. Rooms may be assigned as four-person rooms or dormitories of six to eight people, with several people sharing a room. When traveling briefly to another country, staying at a guesthouse allows travelers to meet various other travelers, share stories, and exchange travel information.

    3. Shared Apartment

A shared apartment is a form of accommodation in which about five to six international students rent a house and live together. Depending on the property, you can choose a private room or share a room with a roommate. Unlike a homestay, it is not a family environment; residents share household chores such as meals, cleaning, and laundry with their housemates. It offers the advantage of being able to socialize with people from various countries.

    Location Overview

    Location:Italy, Florence

What if you could see in person the artworks that once decorated the corners of art books during middle and high school art classes? The actual sculptures, murals, and paintings that appeared as images in art books are all gathered in Florence, Italy. Also, Florence is a city more suited to motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians than to cars, so you can be freed from the noisy honking of cars and explore Florence's alleys.

In the alleys you'll find shops selling small and large artworks, handicrafts, and tourist souvenirs—none of them are simple stores; each exudes its own style. You can see alleys that evoke the atmosphere of the medieval era and charming historic buildings that seem to have their own stories and historical value.

    Travel Guide

    1. Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge)

Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge in Florence that was not damaged during World War II, and it is famous as the place where the poet Dante first met his beloved. It was a gathering place for artists and is a bridge where lovers fasten love locks to pledge eternal love, filling the city with a romantic atmosphere.

Also, the jewelry shops located under the bridge display metal ornaments that showcase Italy's lavish style and attention to detail. Why not choose a ring for your partner here? Give a one-of-a-kind ring and bring them a happy smile.

    2. Michelangelo Hill (Piazzale Michelangelo)

The place to go to see Florence's night view is Michelangelo Hill. Looking at Florence from here is like a painting: Ponte Vecchio, Giotto's Bell Tower, and the Duomo stand in a row, gleaming. The night view of Florence from Michelangelo Hill on the opposite bank of the river from Ponte Vecchio is so beautiful that it feels like seeing Florence from another world.

The lights from the buildings reflecting and sparkling on the river offer another wonderful view. Be sure to climb the hill at sunset, enjoy a glass of sparkling wine, and watch the red sunset turn into night!

    3. The Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore)

The Duomo plays an important role as the meeting place for lovers who had been apart for ten years in the novel 'Between Calm and Passion' by a famous Japanese novelist, and it was also used as a film location. To preserve the cathedral, there is no elevator, so you must climb 500 steps on foot.

If you climb the stairs up to the dome-shaped roof, you can enjoy a view of Florence filled with red roofs without tall buildings. Why not visit this place, where lovers pledge their love, with someone you love?
