What makes this project special
Project Introduction
Project Introduction
This project teaches you how to make masks in Venice, the 'City of Masks', where the mask festival—ranked among the world's top 10 festivals—is held. The custom of wearing masks in Venice originated in the Middle Ages, when commoners living in local Venetian towns made masks and enjoyed 'playing aristocrats' as if they were nobles.
Venetian craftsmen make a variety of masks decorated with elaborate colors and ornaments.
Venetian masks have come to symbolize the city of Venice and are included on the 'must-buy souvenirs' list.
Through this project, participants can learn about Venice's traditional mask-making techniques, which have a history of about 800 years, and create their own unique mask.

About the Area
Venice is a city made up of numerous islands—about 118 islands—and has some 400 bridges connecting them.
Because of its canals and bridges, it is called the 'Maze City' or the 'City of Water.' The maze-like alleys created by the complex waterways and the harmonious atmosphere of old buildings allow visitors to appreciate Venice's unique and beautiful charm.
Transportation in Venice is by gondola or water bus along the waterways.
Gondolas are one of Venice's iconic attractions, with oarsmen wearing striped shirts rowing passengers to their destinations.
Handmade crafts such as masks, lace, glassware, handcrafted perfumes, and handmade dolls are popular souvenirs.

About the Organization
The institution hosting this project is one of the historic workshops in Venice that produces traditional masks.
In mask-making methods, we respect and preserve Venice's long-standing traditional techniques.
We also create masks with unique decorative styles and shapes adapted to modern sensibilities.
We manufacture masks used for film productions and for theatrical performances in renowned theaters.
Based on our experience making various masks, we teach traditional mask-making techniques to participants who join to learn.

Accommodation introduction
Participants can freely choose accommodation in the project area according to their personal preferences and budget.
If participants have difficulty finding accommodation,
Korea Gap Year will recommend accommodations (guesthouses/hotels, etc.) near the project site.
* Accommodation type information
1. Homestay
This accommodation involves staying with a local family in the host country, allowing you to learn the country’s culture and language. Living with the family helps improve language skills through daily communication and provides an understanding of local lifestyles, values, and cultural practices.
2. Guesthouse
A guesthouse typically features shared kitchen, toilet, and shower facilities. Rooms may be dormitories for 4 people or for 6–8 people, with several travelers sharing a room. When traveling briefly to another country, travelers often stay in guesthouses, meet other travelers, exchange stories, and share travel information.
3. Apartment Share
An apartment share is a type of accommodation where international students living abroad rent a house together—usually about 5–6 people—and live communally. Depending on the condition of the house, you can choose a private room or share a room with one friend as roommates. Unlike a homestay, it is not a family setting; meals, cleaning, laundry, and other household chores are shared among the housemates. One advantage is the opportunity to socialize with friends from various countries.

Travel information
Region:Italy, Venice
Top Destination #1 - St. Mark's Square
St. Mark's Square in Venice is the political, economic, and cultural center of the city. The square is surrounded in a U-shape by three buildings—the St. Mark's Basilica, the Procuratie Vecchie built in the 16th century, and the bell tower—evoking the feeling of a vast hall.
The enormous bell tower of St. Mark provides a large shaded area in the otherwise sun-exposed square, giving Venetians a place to rest. Every morning the entrance to the bell tower is crowded with travelers who want to climb up and look over the panorama of Venice.

Top Destination #2 - Venice Carnival
One of the most delightful sights is seeing Venetian citizens and visitors wearing elaborate masks and matching costumes as they wander through the city enjoying the festivities. There is also a contest to choose the most beautiful mask and costume, which changes each year and makes the displays increasingly spectacular.

Top Destination #3 - Burano & Murano Islands
Venice is a city of water with many islands. It takes only about an hour to travel from the main island to Burano and Murano. Murano, reached by water bus, is known for its glassmaking; since the 10th century it has produced glass art and crystal. Handcrafted European pieces made by various artisans became popular as Venetian souvenirs and artworks and spread worldwide. Burano, often visited together with Murano, has house exteriors painted in bright, varied colors. With a canal down the middle and vivid blues, pinks, yellows, reds, and more on either side, it is a beautiful destination that many travelers and photographers visit to take photos. Burano is also famous for its lace, and visitors can watch local grandmothers making lace handicrafts by hand.
