PROJECT INTRODUCTION

 

 

This project offers an opportunity to study at culinary schools and local restaurants in Florence, allowing you to grow as a part of the Italian culinary industry. Show off your passion for cooking in the artistic city of Florence! You will learn the basics of cooking from expert instructors and gain extensive knowledge and experience!

 

 

If you are looking for a new direction in life or waiting for another turning point, head to Florence now. A special time to learn from top experts and study with friends from around the world awaits you. You will find the perfect opportunity to study Italian cuisine.

You will learn not only to make pasta and pizza but also to use a variety of ingredients such as vegetables, eggs, meat, and seafood, and handle numerous spices. You can learn anything you want! The more effort you put in, the broader your experience will be, and you can start the challenge to achieve your dream career.

 

The project features a curriculum that allows for practical work alongside coursework. Students will gain hands-on experience in a variety of kitchens, from small cafes in historic market alleys to fine dining restaurants in five-star hotels, acquiring practical knowledge and experience beyond the classroom.

Additionally, students are provided with an environment where they can test their skills in real-time and receive immediate feedback from mentors, allowing them to rapidly improve their skills. Look forward to seeing how you will grow through diverse experiences!

 

Even if you have never cooked before or have no experience in the industry, anyone can participate in this project. Experienced and skilled Italian cooking instructors will teach you meticulously, so there's no need to worry if you know nothing about cooking. In fact, you will be able to build a solid foundation from the beginning.

Meet experts from various fields of the Italian culinary industry in Florence! By the end of the program, you will be fully prepared to step into the world as a chef.

 

The school in Florence where project participants will attend is a dedicated educational institution committed to maintaining a long tradition and artisan spirit. By collaborating with outstanding maestros in various fields, they create technical and creative programs and accept only 12 students per subject each semester to provide an environment focused solely on student growth. This allows students to independently complete their own work and start new paths.

Participants in this project can learn cooking in Florence, Italy and start new challenges in various aspects of the culinary industry. Gain special opportunities to learn various ingredients and spices, cooking techniques, and acquire practical experience with expert mentoring! If you dream of the future, take on the challenge now.

Participants will focus on basic cooking skills and methods for selecting and handling various ingredients in a 12-week program.

Additional Information

  • This project has fixed start dates every spring and autumn. Spring courses start mid-January and early April, while autumn courses start early September.
  • Classes are conducted Monday to Friday, alternating between mornings and afternoons. Generally, classes follow a designated schedule, but local circumstances may lead to flexible changes. Please consider this when planning your schedule! (Detailed class information will be provided at the start of the project.)

 

 

 

  • The schools and restaurants where classes take place are located within Florence city center, within approximately 30 minutes walking distance.
  • The number of participants is limited to 12. There are no specific requirements or prior experience needed; the participant’s motivation and vision are the most important factors for selection.
  • Local staff interviews may be conducted. This is to assess the applicant’s language skills and motivation.
  • Since this program is a small group class open to participants from around the world, please apply with ample preparation time.

 

English Proficiency ★★☆☆☆

  • This project is conducted in English. A level of English proficiency sufficient to understand and follow the cooking classes is required.

ACCOMMODATION

ACCOMMODATION INTRODUCTION

 

 

In Florence, where the project takes place, there are various accommodation options such as homestays, guesthouses, apartment rentals, and hotels. Participants can freely choose accommodation that fits their preferences and budget in the area where the project is conducted.

* If you need help finding accommodation, Korea Gap Year provides additional guidance and support.

 

■ Homestay

This accommodation type allows you to stay in a local family’s home, interacting directly with hosts and other guests. You can stay with a local host or at a place operated by a Korean host living in the area. Depending on the accommodation, different amenities like meals may be included, allowing you to choose according to your preferences. Generally, you will either live with the host or share the home with other guests.

 

■ Guesthouse

This accommodation involves sharing common areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and showers. Typically, you will be assigned to a shared room with 2 to 8 people, allowing you to meet and interact with other travelers. Staying at a guesthouse offers opportunities for brief encounters with various travelers and sharing travel experiences and information.

 

■ Apartment Rental

Preferred by those who want personal space or wish to live with companions, this accommodation type involves staying in a local apartment, giving you the experience of living like a local. You will manage your own space, including meals, cleaning, and laundry. Alternatively, you can choose a shared house with 5 to 6 people, sharing common areas while having the option of individual rooms or sharing with friends, depending on the house’s condition.

Not to mention the renowned Italian cuisine and unique gelato flavors from every shop! The list of things to enjoy in Florence is almost endless.

With an area about one-sixth the size of Seoul, the entire city is designated as a World Heritage Site, filled with captivating elements on every street and alley. Walking through Florence, you might feel like you’re immersed in intricately crafted works of art. As a place where tourists from around the world come to enjoy the city’s beauty, it also serves as a venue for cultural exchange with numerous people and cultures.

Recommended Destinations

01 Duomo Cathedral

Located in the center of Florence, the official name of Duomo Cathedral is the Cathedral of Florence or Santa Maria del Fiore. Duomo means 'cathedral' in Italian. The massive dome made of red bricks and the towering bell tower are almost symbols of Florence. Many tourists line up for a long time to climb the dome, as it involves ascending 463 steps, so be prepared! However, the view from the top of the dome is said to be unforgettable, so it might be worth the challenge.

 

02 Michelangelo Hill

What comes to mind when you think of 'Michelangelo'? The renowned Italian painter, sculptor, architect, and poet left behind remarkable works, including famous pieces like the Pietà and the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. On Michelangelo Hill, which offers a panoramic view of Florence, you can find a bronze replica of Michelangelo's famous David statue. The original marble version is displayed at the Accademia Gallery, about 30 minutes away from Michelangelo Hill, so it might be nice to visit both.

 

03 Leather Market

If you’re in the heart of 'Made in Italy,' visiting the leather market is a great experience. You can buy high-quality leather products like wallets, handbags, and jackets at affordable prices, making it a popular spot for tourists. Even if you’re not planning to buy leather goods, exploring the market, a vibrant place where the local life is lively, can give you a deeper insight into Florence.

■ The project starts twice a year, with the first session in January or April and the second session in September.

■ The minimum duration for participation in this project is 12 weeks.

■ The costs listed below include project fees, educational materials, and other expenses.

■ Payment by Installments

For those who cannot pay the full amount at once, you can make a preliminary payment of 500,000 KRW and pay the remaining balance within 2 weeks. The process for confirming project participation will proceed based on the date of the preliminary payment, and we will check the availability and the possibility of your participation. Early seat reservation is important to secure the desired date and period!  (Refunds are not possible once participation is confirmed)

* However, if the start date is approaching, the schedule for paying the remaining balance may vary depending on the situation.

 

■ Early Bird Discount and Emergency Application Information

It is recommended to apply for all Gap Year projects at least 3 months before the project start date to allow for proper processing and preparation. Applications should be made no later than 2 months before the start date. However, if you have an urgent need to participate in the project, you can use the emergency application service to expedite the process by paying an additional fee.

* While we will assist in expediting the process as much as possible, please note that there will be basic processing time needed for communication with the local agency and for confirmation of participation. Those using the emergency application service must actively cooperate with the Gap Year operations team in Korea.

** Those who apply at least 180 days before the start date can receive an Early Bird Discount.
