Gap Year Effect
-To young people who worry that a gap year will not help their resume at all..
Many companies often ask if a gap year experience will help their resume.
They ask if a gap year experience will really help their work environment.
Some companies that specialize in overseas business trips or volunteer work say that if an applicant has a special gap year experience abroad, it will be a good resume. Other companies say that it is doubtful that this will help their resume much.
Who should we trust?
How about hearing the stories of gappers firsthand?
As a gap year expert, I have met many gappers on my two-year trip, and I have met people who had really happy gap years and people who had really difficult and hard gap years. Many of them say that a gap year made them who they are today.
I have a friend named Darren Crocker.
A gap year completely changed his perspective on life, and it changed his whole life.
He says:
“I really wanted to see the world, and at the same time, I wanted to change myself. So I did both. It was like leaving my childhood and coming back as a grown man!
“The trips I took, the places I visited, and the people I met during my gap year meant so much to me.”
When asked what he gained from his gap year, Darren said:
“I became a much more balanced person. I actually thought that when I came home from my trip, I would suddenly realize what I really wanted to do with my life. “But that didn’t happen.”
“But I came back with a lot of confidence and maturity. That’s something that I really value in my life every day. “I’m no longer afraid to step out of my comfort zone and take on challenges.”
Did Darren’s gap year really help his resume?
Did it really improve his so-called ‘spec’?
I don’t know.
However, there is no doubt that his gap year changed him into a better person through life experiences.
It doesn’t matter whether your gap year is backpacking, volunteering, or an internship.
What really matters is whether you are willing to take on new experiences.
