[I'm on a gap year too] #Everything About Women - Top jobs where women earn higher salaries than men

listIconBack to List

"A woman must be wiser than anyone else to succeed.

In 2006, Indra Nooyi, the first female chairman and CEO in Pepsi's history, turned Pepsi-Cola—which had long been a perennial number two—into the industry's number one for the first time in over a century. She was selected in 2006 by The Wall Street Journal as one of 'The 50 Women Who Move the World' and was named one of Fortune's '50 Most Powerful Women in Business' in 2010 and 2011. She says the biggest influence in getting her to this position was her parents always telling her as a child, 'You can be anything.' Born in India and rising to the position of an American corporate CEO, she is regarded as a representative figure who broke the 'glass ceiling.' And not only her,in many parts of the world, breaking the invisible glass ceiling women who are building their own careersare on the rise!!!!

* Glass ceiling: The term 'glass ceiling', which first appeared in a 1979 article in the U.S. business weekly The Wall Street Journal about the difficulties of women's promotion, refers to an invisible organizational barrier, entrenched as practices and culture despite sufficient ability and qualifications, that prevents women and members of minority groups from being promoted to senior positions.

In line with this trend, jobs where women earn higher salaries than men, occupations with a high proportion of women, and high-paying jobs for women—through various data, let's examine each occupation in detail and, from their common traits, find out how we should prepare for the future together :)

◼︎ Rankings of female occupations that earn higher salaries than men

The well-known U.S. workplace review site Glassdoor analyzed over 500,000 actual salary records and collected data from various countries including the UK, Australia, Germany, and France to publish rankings of jobs in which women earn higher wages than men.The occupation with the highest relative pay for women is social workerwith women earning 7.8% more than men.It was shown that social work is already one of the promising and popular occupations in our country, which entered an aging society in the 2000s and moved into a full-fledged aged society around 2018.

However, in the rankings of female occupations that earn higher salaries than men, most of the jobs are relatively low-paying, and Glassdoor's report indirectly highlights gender pay discrimination through these results. You thought 'women earn more than men' and were happy!!! For those disappointed by this tragic(?) outcome, we've prepared something better! Even if the salary isn't necessarily higher than men's,Rankings of female-majority jobs that pay annual salaries over 100 million won and have high job satisfaction!!!

◼︎ Rankings of occupations with high female representation

The U.S. career magazine Business Insider published research results based on a 2016 PayScale study that examined jobs held by women with 5–8 years of experience to identify fields with the highest proportions of women. The field with the highest female share was adult health care nurses who provide personalized health services to adults aged 21 and over (about 92%), followed by nurses (90%), psychiatric clinical nurses who diagnose mental health disorders and provide individual and group therapy (84%), pediatricians who specialize in treating children (74%), and senior clinic research assistant nurses who assist in clinical drug trials for seniors (73%).mostly concentrated in healthcareas can be seen.

Outside healthcare, roles such as vice president of HR, wage negotiation manager, licensing manager, and user experience researcher — jobs that involve negotiation, coordination among people, or understanding people's behavior — also ranked highly. If we can identify commonalities between the rankings of female occupations that earn more than men and those with high female representation, we can learn which fields are promising when choosing careers in the future. So,What exactly are the common characteristics of these top-ranking occupations?

◼︎ Criteria for selecting occupations for women and recommended jobs

1. Caring ability

"Women's brains feel more satisfaction when helping others."

Social workers, medical advisors, adult health care nurses, senior clinic research assistant nurses, and other jobs that involve caring for and looking after people occupy many of the top positions in overall rankings of female occupations. The word 'care' we commonly use not only means to look after or nurse, but also encompasses worrying, being concerned, and managing with caution and attention. So why do women, in particular, report higher job satisfaction in these roles and sometimes earn more than men?

People generally feel joy and fulfillment when helping others, and women reportedly experience much greater satisfaction from this. Charles Darwin, the founder of evolutionary theory, wrote about women being much kinder and less selfish than men, and a research team led by Professor Philippe Tobler at the University of Zurich published in the international journal Nature thatwhen women engage in altruistic behavior, dopamine release increasesthey scientifically found.Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that produces immersion, pleasure, happiness, and feelings of love, and researchers explain that women evolved to behave more altruistically to resolve conflicts within groups because, during evolution, conflicts tended to harm women and children.

Superior to men
Jobs where one can exercise innate caregiving abilityWhat are they? As mentioned earlier, social workers are emerging as a promising occupation for women in Korea, and since the pilot operation of the integrated nursing care service began in 2013, demand for nursing-related jobs has been increasing. Although women generally have higher caregiving abilities, it varies by person!!! Instead of choosing a caregiving job just because 'women are naturally more caring and should take jobs that look after people,'if you verify whether this work suits you by indirectly experiencing it through gap-year projects like medical volunteer work or welfare internships and build related career experience, you can more easily find a job that fits you, so keep that in mind!

2. Empathy

“The ability needed for future changes, 'empathy', is 10 times higher in women than in men”

Public relations officers, social media specialists, business coordinators, wage negotiation managers, user experience researchers — jobs that involve interacting with people to convey what you want to say or to lead negotiations between parties — are professions women prefer and can also command higher salaries than men. This is primarily because women's ability to empathize with others' feelings or opinions is much higher than men's, which from around the age of about 4 to 5 girls begin to show higher empathy toward others, with strong emotional expression and emotional sensitivity that are said to continue into adulthood. And girls also, in the process of meeting people, have a relationship-centered tendencywhile boys have a goal-centered tendencyThis tends to appear.

Marketing and research on empathy are already quite active. Beyond simply listening to what the other person requests, it's much more important to examine that person's entire background, understand why they are making such a request, and then strive to solve the problems the other person is asking about. People can experience many emotions, and the ability to read all those individual emotions has steadily developed in women since childhood, and this female strength significantly influences occupations. Especially amid the rapid loss of many jobs as technology advances, the area that machines will not be able to replace humans until the very end is precisely the ability to accept the other person's mind empathyexperts predict.

jobs that can exercise empathywill have higher value. To that end, meeting and interacting with diverse people regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, or religion to naturally improve empathy, and making efforts to accept and understand their cultures and diversity are necessary! If you usually empathize well with others' words and are excellent at affirming them, consider finding occupations through a gap year project where you can use your empathy as an assetWhy not look for them?

3. Excellent discernment

“Cone cells that detect bright light and distinguish colors are generally much more numerous in women.”

To men, they may all look like the same red lipstick, but among women it isn't the same red! Starting with shades like 'burgundy, ruby red, grapefruit red, red wine, red rose, dried red rose', and later even 'fantastic red, angry red, thrilling red, fickle red, frightened red'. Even with a single red lipstick, women are much better than men at distinguishing those subtle colors. Is it simply because men are not interested in lipstick and therefore don't know?Anatomically, the cone cells that detect bright light and distinguish colors are typically far more numerous in women than in men. That's what studies say. Moreover, men tend to have a relatively narrower field of view than women, referred to as a tunnel-like vision, whereas women have a field of view that allows them to see not only the intended object but also the surrounding area, peripheral visionIt's called that.

Could it be that this characteristic female attentiveness, meticulousness, and wider field of view lead to higher satisfaction in product- or purchasing-related roles—such as purchasing specialists, merchandise sellers, licensing managers, and procurement professionals—resulting in higher pay satisfaction among women compared to men? Another example: when buying clothes, men mostly purchase based on the garment's function, but women consider a comprehensive set of factors—various colors and designs, features and price, trends—so although it takes women longer to buy clothes, in terms of efficiency they ultimately show much higher satisfaction.

Thus
Jobs that capitalize on women's meticulousness and attention to detailThese include professions that directly create or purchase products; not only within corporate purchasing teams, but across all sectors related to fashion and consumer goods, women's representation tends to be high. In particular, women's prominence is apparent—as seen when Dior, one of the world's famous luxury brands, appointed a female designer to the top chief position for the first time since its founding in 2016.

Now, finally! Let's take a look at the ranking of women's occupations with the highest salaries this year.

◼︎ 2017 Top 10 highest-paid female occupations

Were you expecting to find out just how much the Top 10 earn and surprised it was smaller than expected? :) For the Top 10 female occupations, the proportion of women is generally low, and salary concentration around certain individuals is more pronounced, so when calculating average salaries they may seem relatively low for a Top 10 list. For example, the top-ranked female CEO's salary, according to Equilar, a U.S. executive data analysis firm,We selected the top 30 CEO salaries of 2016.Three of the top 5 are female CEOsand their average annual salary is an enormous amount exceeding about 40 billion won.Wow!!!!!

First and second place are from the same company, Oracle: Catz, the female CEO who shares responsibility for running Oracle with Hurd, received $40.9 million (about 45.9 billion won), while HP's Meg Whitman received $32.9 million (about 36.8 billion won), and IBM's Virginia Rometty received $32.3 million (about 36.2 billion won). The Wall Street Journal reported that situations in which female CEOs earn more than men are rare because only a tiny number of women reach CEO positions, and most of those are exceptional superstars. The women who made the top five mostly graduated from prestigious universities, built careers at well-known IT companies, and were promoted very quickly. So instead of only looking for jobs with high salaries, you should consider the detailed aspects of each profession when choosing a career, right?! Does that mean I can't dream of becoming a successful female CEO? That's not the case!

Named the world's sexiest CEO in 2013, 'Sophia Amoruso'thrilled women around the world with a success story completely different from that of a typical woman CEO who climbed the ladder steadily. A high school dropout and a freegan surviving day to day on food waste, living with boys while shoplifting and hitchhiking, she truly lived a hand-to-mouth existence. Even as an adult she would quit part-time jobs in less than two weeks because they bored her, and she sometimes stole books to resell as a side business. Then at 22 she discovered people selling vintage clothes through social media, and having grown up digging through trash and recyclables and living on minimum means, vintage clothing was very familiar to her. Thinking, "I could sell something here too!", at age 22 she opened a vintage clothing shop called 'Nasty Gal Vintage' on eBay, and in its first year she made $70,000 (about 80 million won). Two years later she launched her independent shop 'Nasty Gal'. Nasty Gal achieved annual sales of about 27 billion won in three years, and in 2014 reached about 96 billion won in annual sales, becoming the owner of one of the fastest-growing companies to reach 100 billion won in sales before turning 30. Her unique style and success story attracted not only consumers but also the press and investors; Nasty Gal's corporate value rose to about 340 billion won, and Amoruso's personal net worth was recorded at about 310 billion won.

Shall we hear what a woman who walked her own path has to say?

I only worked part-time jobs for exactly two weeks each. I got bored with anything quickly and quit. You can laugh. How thoughtless must I be to do that? I think that too. But after I started Nasty Gal I became immersed in my work and discovered that I enjoy living with challenges. What I know now is that there is, in fact, no job that is absolutely boring to everyone.

If you find the work so boring that you hate it, it's a decisive sign that you're in the wrong place.Unless you are driven by revenge or consumed by hatred, it's almost impossible to succeed while doing work you genuinely hate. The universe we live in is quite exciting, but the time allotted to us is not long.

Look around. If you don't yet see anything that gives you special inspiration, perhaps you haven't looked hard enough.I touched every single piece of clothing in secondhand stores without missing one. You should treat your life the same way. Don't even think about becoming a conventional adult, don't become a boring person, and don't let men sway you.

I always knew I would be a GIRLBOSS. Be yourself. Girl bosses, here is an opportunity for you.

Everything in your world is created by what you think.

Everything in the world happens according to what you think.

- Oprah Winfrey -

What many professionally successful female celebrities have in common. That we all have the power within us to change ourselves. If we cultivate strengths that women are innately stronger in than men, uncover our hidden aptitudes through diverse experiences, and then find a job that suits us, couldn't we, like those successful women, love our work more than anyone else and stand proudly in society? I will always support your dreams!

Girls, be ambitious!

By Editor Dongne Unni
I like new things and starting projects, but I'm extremely realistic. So sometimes adults (friends?) who want to be scolded or told off come to me on their own. I want to be like the 'neighborhood sister'—firmly nagging when needed and spreading good things widely—so that anyone with worries or questions in life can come to me comfortably. ❤︎
