    Information

    Project Introduction

This project is an educational program to learn interior design at a design school in the city of Florence, where Renaissance-era architecture and artists' works come together. An interior designer beautifies the interior of a building and cultivates the indoor environment so that the people living there can enjoy a convenient and comfortable living environment.

You will learn how to design interiors needed to beautify the spaces where you and others live, and how to turn imagined interiors into reality. You will also learn everything from theoretical design knowledge to practical design skills from highly qualified faculty in the field of interior design.

    Project Activities

    Interior Design

The interior design program is taught with a focus on interior design techniques and the design processes required for design projects. It provides students with the foundational knowledge and skills across all areas of interior design, and they learn the concepts of interior design and spatial planning.

Classes consist of theory together with practical courses where students conceptualize virtual 3D models of interior furniture and improve their visual skills. The four software programs required for the interior design process—AutoCAD, 3D Studio Max, SketchUp, and V-Ray—are widely used for interior design in Italy, Europe, and Korea.

Through these projects, you will study space planning, furniture design, interior decoration, textures, color schemes, and lighting themes.

    Design Gallery Visit Class

Visiting design galleries allows students to see the types of real-life interior projects that have been completed. Through this course, students attend lectures, discuss their own opinions about interior design, and take part in presentation sessions.

    Design Solution Project

During the semester, students present problems related to design planning and then develop solutions. Each project proposes multiple solutions with faculty advice and prepares a presentation on how to plan the design space.

    Design Museum Visit

Florence has museums and cultural sites displaying works of art. Each week, visits are made to palaces, churches, museums, and the Uffizi Gallery near the school. Students visit one of Italy's largest furniture exhibitions, ceramics exhibitions, and one of Tuscany's top furniture factories.

The design museum visits are expected to cost an additional €150 per semester.

Participants who cannot join the long-term project can apply individually for a short-term course during the summer season.

For those who wish to participate, please contact koreagapyear@gmail.com by email.

    About the Institution

The institution where this project takes place is a design school located in the center of Florence.

Florence, where Renaissance works and artists' art are found throughout the city, is ideal for design students to study art. The city's eco-friendly interiors and refined atmosphere provide an environment that inspires students' creative thinking. The institution teaches design using Florence's traditional design education curriculum, enabling international students to study Italian design and art.

    Accommodation Information

Participants can freely choose accommodation within the project area according to their personal preferences and budget.

If participants have difficulty finding accommodation, Korea Gap Year can recommend lodging (guesthouses/hotels, etc.) near the project location.

    Accommodation type information

    1. Homestay

A homestay allows international students to stay with a local family in the host country to learn the country’s culture and language. Living with the family helps improve language skills through daily communication and provides an opportunity to understand local lifestyles, values, and cultural practices.

    2. Guesthouse

A guesthouse typically features shared kitchens, bathrooms, and showers. Rooms are often arranged as 4-person or 6–8-person rooms, with several travelers sharing a room. When traveling briefly to another country, people often stay in guesthouses to meet a variety of travelers, exchange stories, and share travel information.

    3. Shared apartment

A shared apartment is a style of accommodation where about 5–6 international students rent a house and live together. Depending on the property, you may choose a private room or share a room with one roommate. Unlike a homestay, it’s not a family setting; residents share household chores such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry with their housemates. It offers the advantage of living with friends from various countries.

    Travel information

    Region: Florence, Italy

If Rome is Italy’s administrative capital, Florence is considered the capital of art. The city itself is a work of art and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its buildings preserved as cultural treasures. World-famous artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli were born in Florence, carried out their artistic activities there, and left behind renowned masterpieces.

Many travelers from around the world visit Florence to be inspired by the city. Florence is also well known as a filming location for the movie "Between Calm and Passion." The meeting of the protagonists atop Florence’s majestic Duomo conveys beautiful feelings of love to audiences. Florence is as romantic and beautiful as the romance portrayed in the film.

Travel Destination TOP 1 - Duomo Cathedral

The Duomo Cathedral is a meaningful place that played an important role as the meeting place for lovers who had been separated for ten years in the novel "Between Calm and Passion" by a famous Japanese author, and it has also served as a film setting. To preserve the cathedral, no elevator was installed, so you must climb 500 steps on foot. However, after climbing the stairs to the dome-shaped roof at the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view filled with red roofs across the city of Florence without tall buildings. Why not visit this place, where lovers promise their love, together with someone you love?

Travel Destination TOP 2 - Uffizi Gallery

"Uffizi" is the Italian word for "offices." The building, now used as an art gallery, was formerly Florence's administrative offices. The Medici family, who once dominated Florence, collected works by artists over about 200 years and used the building to display the artworks they had acquired and produced; it later became an art gallery open to the public.

It houses collections of Renaissance-era paintings and is known as one of the world's leading art museums; many students studying art, artists, and visitors come to see it.

Travel Destination TOP 3 - Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a beautiful area in southern Italy that was selected by Korean Air as one of the must-see places before you die. "Cinque Terre" means "five villages," and five seaside villages are connected by paths between the cliffs. Many travelers visit Cinque Terre to walk along its narrow paths. It is a small, modest area where you can enjoy wandering the alleys while smelling the sea of southern Italy. If you climb to the top along the narrow cliffside paths, you can enjoy a view of pastel-colored houses layered on the cliff edges as if they might tumble down.
