    PROJECT INTRODUCTION

    Project Introduction

This project is a medical internship in a Cambodian hospital where medical facilities and patient services are inadequate. Cambodia faced a tragic period in the 1960s when many doctors and nurses were killed under the leadership of the Khmer Rouge. As a result, Cambodian citizens are often unable to receive proper medical treatment.

Through the medical internship project, you can share knowledge and experiences necessary for treatment with Cambodian medical staff and help improve the poor medical conditions in Cambodia. This project allows direct participation in medical tasks in the hospital. Additionally, participants can engage in medical activities suited to their abilities, making it a meaningful internship project for personal development.

#A small tip about transportation in Cambodia

Cambodia has a weak transportation infrastructure with underdeveloped public transport systems such as buses and subways. The main modes of transportation are motorcycle taxis where you ride on the back seat of a motorcycle, and tuk-tuks, which are three-wheeled vehicles modified from motorcycles. Motorcycle taxis are very dangerous for safety reasons. Therefore, we recommend using tuk-tuks, even though they may cost a bit more. Unlike regular taxis, tuk-tuks do not have fixed prices and the fare is determined through negotiation with the driver each time. The usual one-way fare starts from around 2 USD, and the cost varies greatly depending on the distance, time of day, and the number of passengers. Although the unfamiliar transportation system in Cambodia might initially be confusing, understanding Cambodia's relatively poor transportation system and adapting to the local culture will help you enjoy your time in Cambodia even more!

    Location Overview

    LOCATION INTRODUCTION

    Location:   Cambodia, Phnom Penh

Cambodia’s official name is the ‘Kingdom of Cambodia,’ and it is bordered by Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand in the southeastern part of Indochina.

The capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, is the center of its economy and politics, where the painful past of French colonialism and modern development coexist. The city is full of attractions like the National Museum, the Royal Palace, the Floating Pavilion, and the Independence Monument. However, behind the rapid economic development, you can see the struggles of many Cambodians trying to get by.

Most Cambodians practice Buddhism and live according to its teachings. You will often see monks in their traditional robes while walking around the city. Consequently, cultural activities revolve around temples, and many travelers visit Cambodia to see its temples and Buddhist culture.

    1. Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat in the Siem Reap region of Cambodia is a must-see representative site of Angkor culture when visiting Cambodia. 'Angkor' means 'royal city,' and 'Wat' means 'temple.' This site features grand Hindu temples and Buddhist elements, making it a world cultural heritage. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries, Angkor Wat is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the largest stone building in the world, with distinctive faces carved into each stone. It is the only remaining heritage from the Khmer Empire and is considered a significant legacy with its immense scale and intricate sculptures. It is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site to prevent further destruction and is well-preserved as a tourist attraction.

    2. Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is a beach city located at the southern tip of Cambodia and is a representative tourist resort city. Cambodia is surrounded by land on three sides and has a coastline on one side, making sea views and seafood rare. However, Sihanoukville Beach, about 4-5 hours from Phnom Penh, attracts many international tourists and offers opportunities for scuba diving. It is a perfect paradise destination to escape everyday life and enjoy eating, drinking, and relaxing in Cambodia.

    3. Bayon Temple
Bayon Temple can be seen as a representative architectural site of Angkor Wat. Similar in style to Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple was built to appease the souls of those who died in war. Many travelers visiting Cambodia take Angkor Wat package tours that include this site. If you think of Angkor Thom as a vast square city surrounded by walls, Bayon is the temple in the very center of Angkor Thom. Bayon Temple is a masterpiece made from about 200,000 stone blocks. By visiting Bayon Temple, you can experience and appreciate the artistry of ancient Cambodian people through its various carved faces.
