PROJECT ACTIVITIES
This project is a project where you participate as an intern placed in nonprofit organizations and institutions within Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
During internship hours, you will mainly work with local Cambodians, and in your daily life,
you will interact with interns and volunteers from various nationalities at the accommodation. Gain practical experience and make friends from different nationalities!

■ Activity Guide
- Generally, activities are conducted on weekdays from Monday to Friday, for 30~40 hours per week, and are unpaid.
* Activity days and hours may vary depending on the placement organization.
- Interns will assist the activities of staff and managers within the organization.
- Project activities generally include participation in writing reports/proposals, fundraising activities, managing the organization’s website, and other tasks.

■ Example of Dispatch Organization
1. HIV & AIDS Related Field
We are conducting an HIV/AIDS education project in cooperation with the Cambodian government, and activities are being carried out in various regions as well as Phnom Penh. This organization strives to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV and AIDS, and actively cooperates with the government, local community, and civil society organizations to work in various fields such as nutrition, basic education, nutrition-related education, hygiene education, and sexual violence.
2. Human Rights Protection Field
This is an organization registered with the Cambodian government that is active in protecting the human rights of minorities. It is one of the few organizations established directly by Cambodians, even among the many international non-profit organizations in Cambodia. This organization, founded by young Cambodians, works to prevent serious human rights abuses and educates and enlightens Cambodians on basic knowledge about land related to agriculture, which supports the livelihoods of many Cambodians, to prevent exploitation.
3. Urban Planning and Regional Development Field
This organization aims for development based on the community and is working to help local residents escape poverty through regional development and educational activities using practical and innovative methods. It emphasizes the dignity and equality of the human rights of local residents suffering from poverty and aims to improve their quality of life.

This project involves participating as an intern at a Cambodian non-profit organization. As an intern, you need to be able to communicate in basic English for tasks such as writing and editing proposals and reports. Communication with local staff will mostly be in English, and learning some basic Khmer will be very helpful for communicating with local people.

INSTITUTION INTRODUCTION
The organization running this project is a non-profit organization based in Cambodia. It was officially established in 1997 after receiving certification from a Cambodian government agency. Currently, it receives funding through various international organizations and operates various development projects for the social advancement of Cambodia. They have been steadfast in strengthening civil society in Cambodia and working to establish democracy in the society.
The organization, which has been dedicated to establishing civil society in Cambodia, received an award in 2004 from the World Non-Governmental Organizations Union for its contribution to the development of civil society. It continues to actively collaborate with local non-profit organizations in Cambodia and is involved in the development of local communities.
Message from the Local Coordinator
I am Mey, the coordinator managing local participants. I have been running this program for a long time and have had the opportunity to work with many foreign participants. One thing I would like to tell participants is not to hesitate to ask for help whenever they face difficulties or problems. Please feel free to speak up!
Our staff, including myself, are dedicated to addressing cultural differences and other aspects to support participants. The accommodations and institutions where activities will take place are very safe and verified. However, do not come with excessively high expectations of Cambodia. You will make new friends through this activity and won't feel lonely. An open mind will be beneficial!
ACCOMMODATION INTRODUCTION
During the project period, you will stay in a guesthouse-style volunteer accommodation with other participants. You'll have the opportunity to enjoy communal living with friends from various nationalities.
The accommodation is directly operated and managed by the local partner organization and is located in the city, ensuring a safe living environment. Rooms are shared by an average of 3 people, each with a private bathroom, fan, and basic furniture.Common areas include tables, chairs, and a balcony where you can relax or spend time with friends in the evenings or on weekends.
Meals are provided at a designated restaurant with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and you can select your preferred menu. Lunch can be packed as a takeaway. Breakfast usually consists of simple items like bread, eggs, and fruit with tea, while lunch and dinner include various dishes such as fried rice, noodles, curry, and meats. The accommodation is located in Phnom Penh, making it convenient to participate in the project during the week and explore the surroundings on weekends. Traveling from the accommodation to the project site takes approximately 20-30 minutes by tuk-tuk, a common Cambodian mode of transport.

Please note that Cambodia is generally hottest from March to May, and availability tends to fill up quickly between July and August.

A few tips about transportation in Cambodia
Cambodia has a weak transportation infrastructure with underdeveloped public transportation systems such as city buses and subways. The main modes of transportation are motorcycle taxis, where passengers ride on the back of a motorcycle, and tuk-tuks, which are three-wheeled vehicles modified from motorcycles. Motorcycle taxis are very unsafe, so it is recommended to use tuk-tuks for safety, even though they may be a bit more expensive. Unlike regular taxis, tuk-tuks do not have fixed rates and prices are negotiated with the driver each time; recently, mobile apps are often used to book and pay for tuk-tuks.
A typical one-way fare starts at around 2 USD, and costs vary widely depending on distance, time of day, and number of passengers. Although you might initially be surprised by the unfamiliar transportation system compared to our country, understanding Cambodia's relatively poor transportation infrastructure and adapting to the local culture will help you have a more enjoyable experience in Cambodia!

The official name of Cambodia is Kingdom of Cambodia, and it shares borders with Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand in Southeast Indochina. Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, is the economic and political center where the painful past of French colonial rule and modern development coexist. The city is filled with attractions like the National Museum, Royal Palace, Floating Pavilion, and Independence Monument.
On the other hand, you can also see the difficult lives of Cambodian people who are struggling behind the rapid economic development. Due to political instability, the benefits of economic growth are not evenly distributed. Cambodia is often described as a poor country with significant wealth disparity, and many locals are suffering behind the rapid growth. Numerous international NGOs and aid organizations are working hard to rebuild society in Cambodia through efforts in education, economy, agriculture, and politics.

For those who cannot pay the full amount at once, if you prepay a registration fee of 500,000 KRW and pay the remaining balance within 2 weeks, the process for confirming your project participation will start based on the date of the registration fee payment, allowing us to check your eligibility and available slots. It is important to secure your spot early to participate on your desired dates and duration! (No refunds once participation is confirmed)
*However, if the start date is approaching, the deadline for paying the remaining balance may change depending on the situation.
■ Early Bird Discount and Emergency Application Guide
All Gapyear projects are recommended to be applied for at least 3 months before the project start date due to the normal processing time and preparation period. It is principle to apply at least 2 months in advance. However, if you have urgent reasons or need to join the project quickly, you can use the emergency application service by paying an additional fee for expedited processing.
*While we assist with expedited processing, there is basic time required for communication with local organizations and confirming participation. All procedures will be conducted as for regular participants, so those using the emergency application service should actively cooperate with the Korea Gapyear Operations Team.
