#Overcame fear of new experiences #Realization of the importance of environmental protection #Confidence; an experience worth trying at least once

I often thought that it would be great if we could protect the environment by ensuring proper recycling.
Through this gap year project, there were many difficult moments, but there were also so many fun and memorable things that I think it''s worth experiencing at least once. Volunteering enthusiastically for environmental conservation in New Zealand''s nature with friends from around the world Park Seong-min, gap-year participant ''Gapper'' (24, university student) / 2-week gap year |
# I wanted to broaden my perspective on life by meeting a variety of people.

Hello. I''m Park Seong-min, a university student ''Gapper'' who went on an overseas volunteer trip to New Zealand. I chose this project because I wanted my trip abroad to be meaningful. When it actually came time to leave, I was quite worried while preparing my things. I was especially concerned about whether communication would go smoothly there, but when it happened, everything worked out fine.
For project preparation, I referred to the emails sent by Gap Year, bought a SIM card in advance, exchanged currency beforehand, planned everything ahead, and prepared each item one by one while checking the packing checklist.
Through this gap year,I wanted to broaden my perspective on life by meeting a variety of people.
* For Park Seong-min, who had a strong desire to try new and diverse experiences, a customized 1:1 personal mission to build self-esteem, confidence, and enable new challenges was provided daily, and a ''Gap Year Note'' for self-reflection and planning was also provided.
# A day in New Zealand

I wake up at 7:00, immediately have breakfast (toast with strawberry jam or Nutella), pack a lunch to eat outside, and leave for the volunteer site at 7:50.
Then we start full volunteer work from 8:00, take about a 30-minute lunch break to eat the packed food, volunteer until 4:00, return to the accommodation at 6:00, prepare dinner, eat together, talk, and then go to sleep — that''s roughly the daily routine.
# I overcame my pre-experience fears and gained a lot of confidence that I could do it.

First of all, the people I met there (fellow volunteers) were very kind and treated me well, which I appreciated.
If I had to pick a memorable story, it would be returning to the accommodation after working hard with other foreign volunteers in the second week, cooking and eating together, laughing, having dessert, and playing games — that left the biggest impression.I was especially grateful that they paid extra attention to those of us who weren''t good at English, explaining things simply and being considerate.
Also, the memory of going to the aquarium and eating together on the weekend with a foreign friend I met in Australia remained a very good memory.
Through participating in the project activities, I realized how important spoken English really is wherever you go, and through this project experience,I overcame my pre-experience fears and gained a lot of confidence that I could do it.
# Because there were so many fun and memorable things,

through this project I was able to think again about the natural environment, and I thought it would be great if our country, like New Zealand, reduced waste andI often thought that it would be great if we could protect the environment by ensuring proper recycling.
Through this gap year project there were many hardships, but there were also so many fun and memorable things that I think it''s worth experiencing at least once.
# For prospective participants

Be sure to pack everything while checking the packing checklist. Also, it''s better to bring rubber boots rather than hiking shoes.
Although airlines strictly regulate baggage weight, I personally didn''t feel that way. So don''t worry and be sure to bring the important things.
# My personal New Zealand travel tip

You can explore the area around Auckland in two days, and if you book a tour that includes the Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton Village you can visit them all in a single day.
