Greece: Rescue Operation for Injured Turtles in the Mediterranean
Q. Please tell us your satisfaction with the project. If you are satisfied, what did you like?
A. 8 out of 10
I was able to communicate directly with Greeks and learn about different cultures and ideas.Above all, because you learn and continuously use the relevant English in the work environment, you can develop quick responsiveness. Depending on the season, the amount of free time for rest orI was disappointed that the workload varied.Currently it''s a period with not much work, so I only worked about four hours a day and could get enough rest, but during the time I participated it was the low season and there were few volunteers. During the month there was only one day off, so I couldn''t travel enough, which was disappointing. Apart from that, I''m satisfied with everything.
Q. Would you recommend this project?
A.6points / 10 points
In my personal opinion, for studentsI would actively re-commend this project.I am a working professional, so my main purpose was more rest than going to work, but I felt that I did more work than resting.I think students can gain good experience by doing this kind of labor before getting a job.
Also, the rescue center''s manager truly loves working with animals, so I think you will be given an opportunity by this person to think about the work you love or want to do.I believe such an opportunity will be provided.
The activities involve handling the lives of turtles, sothe physical and mental labor is quite demanding. As with most animal-related work, there are many elements that can cause injury, and sufficient strength to lift turtles is required. Also, when giving injections or IVs, turtles sometimes writhe in pain, and you need a certain decisiveness—perhaps coldness—not to stop in the middle. (Otherwise the turtle would end up receiving the needle several times.)
Q. What changes occurred in you through this project?
I experienced a lot of changes. I always worried a lot about hobbies. One time, after a barbecue party with the organization''s volunteers, there was a lot of leftover meat, and since no one there liked meat, I cooked and ate it myself. There were about ten steaks, and by trying various methods,I kept trying to cook them, and when I finally was satisfied, the feeling was amazing. When Ireturn to Korea, I plan to cook alone at least twice a week. I''m also considering studying the basics and obtaining certifications. However, on the other hand, worries about my job remain even in a faraway foreign country. It''s like trying to open a lock without a password. I think it''s a problem I can''t comfortably solve yet.
Q. Any final comments?
First of all, I couldn''t participate in the original Zakynthos project and had to change projects, and I''m very grateful to the staff member who took care of me at that time. They were busy then and couldn''t keep in touch and delayed processing related documents, and I imagine they were naturally tired over those months...
