Gap year review: Showing Cambodian children a boundless world through English education

#Regained self-esteem, learned to love myself #Courageous choice, responsibility #Overcame fear of people

This time, I wanted to spend the one-year gap year I set for myself doing whatever I wanted, so I chose the Cambodia project — and I have no regrets about that decision. If I had joined a different program, I would have also put the responsibility on someone else.I also used to have low self-esteem, but seeing myself try to reflect on who I am and work to become a better person made me proud. I''m still far from perfect, but I think I''ve come to love myself a little more.

    Currently, South Korea is,

Each year 60,000 middle and high school students drop out, 346,000 people in their twenties are just idling without dreams, and the one-year turnover rate after employment has entered the 40% range,75% of university students are dissatisfied with campus life, and more than 80% of office workers say they do not feel happy. Many people tell others to dream, but to address this problem that lacks practical methods and support, we aim to introduce the ''gap year'' to South Korea.

''Gap Year''is a time to either balance or temporarily pause studies and work and engage in various activities such as volunteering, travel, internships, education, or startups,to set the direction for moving forward — a culture encouraged in the US, Europe, Japan, and elsewhere.

#MeI wanted to set my career direction while getting to know myself.

Hello — I''m a 25-year-old female university student who took a leave of absence at a relatively advanced age for the sole reason of finding myself.I entered university two years later than others and spent my time wandering around,If this continues, only moneyand job huntingpreparing, and mydream or mythoughts about myself were graduallynotdoingwouldbeso I took a leave of absence! While on leave I searched around and learned about Gap Year consulting, and after receiving consulting I decided to participate in the project.

I have a personality that doesn''t open up to people and I''m very shy around strangers, so my goal was to change this personality!I also wanted to understand myself and set a career direction. While everyone else was preparing for jobs, I wanted to know what I wanted to do and then prepare hard for it, but I didn''t know what I wanted to do. However, now that half of my gap year has passed, my thoughts have changed a lot.

I think it''s not about getting to know myself in a short period, but about continually thinking and acting to shape myself. If there are shortcomings, I try to change them or embrace them by acknowledging and comforting myself.

    # My daily schedule

My daily routine was taking a tuk‑tuk that came in front of the accommodation at 7:30 AM to the kindergarten. We had classes from 8:00 to 10:30, then a break until 2:00, and classes continued until 4:30.

I taught in a class with children aged 3 to 5, but in reality there''s almost no teaching—it''s better to think of it as playing with the kids.I once switched volunteer organizations; before moving, at that organization I taught English to elementary and middle school students. At that time, an American and I freely arranged the schedule and taught, but it was difficult because the kids lacked motivation to study.

    # My travel recommendation

I had to come in suddenly so I couldn''t travel to Cambodia! I only took a week‑long trip to Bangkok in the middle. Bangkok was more wonderful than I expected!

If possible, I think it''s best to travel around Southeast Asia after the program ends and then return to Korea. To do that, you should book your flight dates well in advance.

    # My tip

    (Accommodation)

You should know that there''s a fee for using the air conditioner!

    (Food)

The provided meals are unlikely to suit your taste, so I recommend bringing things like chojang (red pepper dipping sauce), gim (seaweed), tuna, etc. from Korea!

    (Luggage)

I brought the grammar book I used during my language study in the Philippines and one book to read when bored (an easy novel in English so that it would take a long time to read).I checked what to pack on Excel and put everything into a huge 28‑inch suitcase.

I think that even with the same project, everyone experiences different things. Since everyone made precious gap year time, I think it''s good to clarify the reason for taking a gap year. If you have your own reason for wanting a gap year, you''ll be able to spend that valuable time in a place that suits you better!

    # The moststrongly feltis that, rather than overthinking things in your head, having the courageto take a step forwardand once you do,the nextwhatyou shoulddo becomes clear. It was that I could see.

It''s been a few weeks since I came to Korea, but there are still some children who stay on my mind. They were young friends who knew nothing, but I was always happy when I saw their smiles!! I also felt my parents'' love the most. It must be frustrating to hear others talking about getting jobs, studying for certifications and TOEIC, and that some have already been employed, but I was so grateful for their constant support.

What I felt most strongly was that instead of overthinking things in your head, if you have the courage to take a step forward, you''ll be able to see what to do next. Before actually doing the Cambodia project, I had an opportunity to do something else, so I agonized over it a lot.Acquaintances told me to join a different program, so I worried a lot. I''m the type of person who cares a lot about others'' opinions!

But this time, I chose the Cambodia project because during this one-year gap year I wanted to do what I wanted my own way, and I don''t regret that decision. If I had done another program, I would have shifted the responsibility onto someone else.I also had low self-esteem, but I found it admirable that I was trying to reflect on myself and working to become a better person. I''m still lacking in many ways, but I think I''ve come to love myself a little more.

    My gap year is

    Experience★★★☆☆

    Learning★★★★☆

    Environment★☆☆☆

The area isn''t very safe, and there aren''t many nearby places to visit.

    Safety★★★☆☆

It''s not completely safe, but I believe nothing serious will happen if you stay cautious.

    Leisure★☆☆☆☆

After volunteer activities, you''ll have about half a day free, but there aren''t many places to go, so it''s good to come up with things to do on your own.
