나답게, 단단하게, 즐겁게
Two years ago I attended a lecture on appropriate technology and was captivated by the idea of ''technology that solves social problems.'' Of course that excitement didn''t lead to any real change in my life, but I always kept the desire to experience appropriate technology firsthand if I had the chance. Then I happened to hear that Korea Gapyear was offering ''WakaWater education.'' Seeing photos of WakaWater brought back that feeling from two years ago, and thinking it might be an opportunity to experience appropriate technology directly, I applied right away.
- WakaWater: a fun education that changes the world |

The WakaWater education was conducted together with middle and high school students belonging to the Scouts federation..At first I felt a bit burdened about working with the students..I didn''t know much about WakaWater, and I had come to learn about appropriate technology,, but when I stood in front of the students I somehow felt that I should lead and teach them as a senior..
However, among the participating students there were some who knew more about appropriate technology than I did, and some whose attitudes and thoughts were more admirable than mine..Moreover, watching students who were proactive and led by example throughout the making of WakaWater made me feel that my worries had been premature..
Overall, the construction of WakaWater was4teams..After each team made one layer of the bamboo frame, a total of 4layers were stacked to make a 4-layer bamboo frame,, and then you just hang the cloth that will collect the water inside and it''s finished..Although it didn''t seem difficult from the explanation, I remember that the work of connecting bamboo to bamboo was quite tough..

My team was responsible for the WakaWater''s 1I was in charge of the floor. 1Because the floor serves as the pillar of the whole, it had to be larger and made stronger than the other floors. With the teacher''s kind explanations and the team members'' active cooperation, in a warm and friendly atmosphere, 1finished making the floor.

In fact, up until that point,1I thought that if we properly made only the first floor, all our work would be finished. However, raising the floors one by one was much harder work than expected. When connecting the floors, the bamboo joints didn''t fit well, so we had to disassemble parts of the bamboo frame and redo the work, and because the bamboo couldn''t bear the weight, we also had to reinforce them to make the structure sturdy.
1When making the floor, I felt an unnecessary competitiveness with other teams, but after trying the work of stacking floors, I realized that cooperation between teams is much more important.. Because only by following the agreed rules and cooperating with other teams is it not difficult to piece together WakaWater''s big picture. In the end, we spent much more time building the tower than making a single floor. By the afternoon we could have been exhausted, but everyone continued to firmly connect the bamboo and diligently cleaned up until the end. Seeing those friends,‘passion’It also became an opportunity to rethink it..
About 8Waka Water was finally completed in about 8 hours..Everyone was delighted to see the completed Waka Water..Making Waka Water wasn''t something I could do alone; it was only possible through mutual cooperation..Perhaps for that reason, in that moment I felt that we were all one team, and I thought that feeling itself was a valuable experience..

Through the Waka Water training, I gave a lot of thought to the meaning of appropriate technology..Perhaps appropriate technology is something created when the locals'' urgent needs and a spirit of cooperation come together..Of course, we did not take part in the actual invention and use of appropriate technology, but just participating directly in it made my interest in and understanding of it more mature..I also thought that next time I would like to take part in work directly involving appropriate technology..
