I am a 23-year-old nursing student currently on leave. I had been living diligently, but at some point a sense of emptiness washed over me, as if it was my life but I felt like I wasn''t the main characterI felt that way. Repetitive daily life, worries about the future, Because my self-esteem kept getting lower, I ultimately decided to take a leave of absence.
#Overseas medical volunteer experience in Cambodia
With the money I saved from part-time jobs I went on a medical volunteer trip to CambodiaI went. As soon as I arrived, surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, language, and new people, ''Ah, I''m really abroad,'' I realized. Since my first clinical rotation was in obstetrics and gynecology, I thought I could be the most helpful so I chose obstetrics and gynecology.During the first seven days I mainly learned and just observed, From the eighth day, I was able to perform procedures myself with the nurse''s help.EspeciallyWhen I bathed a two-day-old newborn and placed the baby in the parents'' armsit was incredibly moving.Although we couldn''t communicate well, the parents, through their eyes, expressions, and by holding my hand, expressed their gratitude. In that moment, I felt I should work even harder.
# Insights gained from volunteering
I learned a lot from spending time with Cambodian student nurses. At first, being in an unfamiliar foreign country, I lacked motivation and language barriers made it difficult, but my friends reached out to me and encouraged me to try proactively, and I was deeply moved that they practiced Korean to speak with me.I also had fun with fellow volunteers, going to a pool villa or exploring popular eateries.Especially Cambodia''s signature dishes, lok lak and rice noodle souparea perfect fit for Korean tastes, and I still remember them.
# What I gained from my gap year and my goals going forward
Through this gap year, Ifound courage to express myself, confidence in my major, and a sense of direction in lifewas able to find.I realized that more important than building up credentials,is learning to approach people first and how to be cheerful. So my goal is“Live each day meaningfully and work hard”.From now on, I''ll practice small talk first andto develop my communication skills,I also plan to focus on self-development, such as obtaining foreign language certifications. And someday, becoming a good nurse,my ultimate goal is to volunteer abroad again.
If anyone, like me, is struggling with burnout or worries about the future,a gap year and volunteering abroadI highly recommend experiencing them.It will change the way you view life,Above all,a time to believe in yourself againIt will be.
