Review by gap year participant Cheon Dain

    #Gap year motivation

Hi heheI''m Cheon Dain, born in 2004!I''m studying in the U.S. as a pre-med major. The project I participated in wasa medical volunteer program in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, andthe reason I chose this activity wasthat I could work in a hospitaladvantagebecause it had that advantage.I also learned that it was a large hospital within Phnom Penh, andI thought I would be able to meet a variety of patients,so I chose the Phnom Penh, Cambodia medical volunteer program.

#I wanted to learn passion and the right attitude toward patients.

I had long experience living abroad and in group settings, so I wasn''t too worried. I applied for an e-visa before departure. I also researched the local culture and many places to travel on weekends! What I hoped to gain from my gap year was the right mindset for treating patients while working at a hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

#I liked that I could get hospital work experience and make friends from different countries.

I had to be at work by 8 AM, so I left for the hospital by tuk-tuk around 7:40. After that I worked until 12, ate lunch, and had personal time; during that time I mainly studied for university or read. Finding and visiting a new café every day was a small pleasure. What I liked about this gap year project was not only that I could gain hospital work experience, but also that I could communicate with friends from various countries and make new Korean friends.

Through the gap year project I was able to make several Korean friends; traveling together on weekends, chatting, and eating fruit on the terrace at night became great memories.

#Watching the local medical staff, I learned a lot about what it means to be a healthcare professional.

The hospital staff were very kind and taught me well, so I was often moved by that; watching doctors and nurses who treated patients sincerely, I learned a lot about what it means to be a healthcare professional.

I recommend coming with an open mind and I recommend not skipping anything the doctors and nurses recommend and trying it.

#I rediscovered the reason for my dream and gained the courage to live diligently. I became a stronger person.

I joined this project while I was uncertain about my career path, and it gave me time to rediscover why I dreamed of becoming a doctor; because of this I returned to the United States with the courage to live diligently. I gained confidence in my dream and became a bit stronger.

#My personal Cambodia travel route I discovered during the gap year

For Angkor Wat, it''s good to make use of the sleeping bus, and personally I highly recommend Bangkok as well. I went leaving Friday and returning Sunday, and it was very enjoyable. Spending one Saturday following the route morning swim—Wat Arun (traditional costume)—ICONSIAM—Chatuchak weekend market—dinner cruise—beer made the trip very fulfilling and fun.

#A time of growth: I was able to think a lot about myself and review my career path.

Being able to work at a Phnom Penh hospital was very meaningful. In particular, the experience of working in the psychiatric ward was special—there was less to do than in the MICU, but I was very glad to be able to learn how doctors approach patients mentally and to understand how the psychiatric ward operates.During the two weeks in the psychiatric ward, most of all I was able to reflect on myself, review my career path, and grow.

    #Thank you, Korea Gap Year!

    I sincerely thank everyone!

    #My gap year is!

    Experience ★★★★★

: As a pre-medical major I had never had clinical experience, but they kindly taught and let me perform IVs and ABGs, so it was an incredibly special experience.

    Learning ★★★★★

: When I was in the psychiatric ward, doctors and medical students even brought notebooks and very kindly taught the basic knowledge needed as a psychiatrist. Since I wanted to become a psychiatrist, it was very useful.

    Safety ★★★★★

: I stayed safe and well without any dangerous incidents.

    Leisure ★★★★

: I was a bit tired because I had to go to work in the morning, but since I had free time after 12, I could go to a pretty café or focus on self-development.
