Medical volunteer work sharing love in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Hwang Ga-yeon''s gap year review |
# Since childhood, overseas medical volunteering has been one of my bucket list items.

Hello! I am Hwang Ga-yeon, a third-year nursing student.
Since I was young, doing overseas medical volunteer work was on my bucket list, and wanting to use my major to help many people, I chose it through a gap year.
* Nursing student Hwang Ga-yeon wanted to fill her gap year with meaningful experiences. Therefore, we recommended medical volunteering in Vietnam, where she could be in a positive environment and take on new challenges! Not sure where or how to start a new challenge and want a customized plan? We highly recommend a 1:1 consultation with a gap year specialist!

# I wanted to do medical volunteer work and also overcome my fear of English.

The main reason I joined the Vietnam gap year was medical volunteer work, but at the same time what I wanted to change was my fear of English. I had a lot of difficulty speaking and listening in English, but as I gradually adapted to the environment, I was able to understand and hear much more on the last day than on the first.
# I met precious connections through medical volunteering.

Through medical volunteering, I was able to meet truly precious people.I was able to socialize with many people, including my Korean roommate Hwayeon, Japanese Miki and Moe, and American Frenda, among others.Everyone was kind, and even though my English was clumsy, they waited patiently, so we naturally became good friends.
At first it was very difficult adapting to the endless English and unfamiliar surroundings, but by thinking positively that everything I''m experiencing now will help me later, I was able to adapt and accept those unfamiliar environments.
# It wasn''t just simple volunteer work — I gained valuable experiences and unforgettable memories.

At first I started with the mindset of just adding one extracurricular activity, but after going, I''m proud that it wasn''t just a simple activity; I came back with truly valuable experiences and unforgettable memories..I''m happy that the memories of entering a foreign healthcare system I would never normally encounter, doing hands-on practice, and spending time talking and laughing with people of many nationalities have become very precious memories.
I feel like I''ve gained a huge amount of life experience. In medical terms, I''ve accumulated many experiences others haven''t had, my life experience seems to have increased, and I no longer fear taking on challenges.
I want to say one thing to future gappers preparing for medical volunteering.Go and If you actively participate in all the experiences you go through, it will be a truly meaningful time. And one more thing! Practicing listening to and speaking English a bit before you depart will be a great help for your volunteer work!
# Unforgettable encounters with people, and a special medical experience
I was able to meet people of far more diverse nationalities than I expected, and communicating with them was such a great experience.I don''t think I''d have the opportunity to speak with people from such diverse nationalities anywhere else. AndThere are hardly any opportunities to visit a hospital abroad, so being able to see and learn about the foreign medical system up close was great, and all the doctors, nurses, and trainees kindly taught me, so I was able to do practical training that I couldn''t even do in Korea.
# Vietnam Ho Chi Minh medical volunteer activity — here''s my daily routine!
On Monday, there was a general orientation along with orientations for each volunteer field. There was also a class to learn some basic Vietnamese, which was very useful for communicating locally. In the evening, all volunteers ate together and enjoyed karaoke, providing a natural opportunity to get to know each other.
From Tuesday to Friday, the full volunteer schedule was carried out, and a typical day was as follows:
07:30Gather at the dining hall
07:50Arrive at the hospital (about a 20-minute walk)
Change clothes and prepare
08:00 ~ 10:30Morning volunteer work
11:00 ~ 13:30Lunch and rest
13:50Arrive at the hospital
14:00 ~ 15:30Afternoon volunteer work
Free time afterwards
Weekends were free time, where each person spent a relaxed time resting, doing activities they wanted, or exploring the surroundings.
My Vietnam Ho Chi Minh overseas medical volunteer gap year!
Experience★★★★★
: Nursing abroad and living with people of many nationalities was an incredibly special, fascinating, and meaningful experience.
Learning ★★★★★
: The doctors and nurses kindly showed me how to perform procedures like sterilization and injections, and they explained which surgeries patients had undergone, so I learned a great deal.
Environment ★★★
: The environment was somewhat different from Korea, so it was a bit disappointing.
Safety ★★★★
: The coordinators and the gap year organizers provided good safety guidance, such as emergency contacts, but at first there was still some awkwardness and nervousness from being in an unfamiliar country.
Leisure ★★★★★
: Free time was after 3:30 PM and on weekends, so there was plenty of time to tour and explore Ho Chi Minh, which was great.
