Im O-ja’s gap review!
Hello, my name is Im O-ja, I'm 30 year old and I lived in Montpellier, France for a month.
During this time, I had a lot of worries about the future. I was feeling unenergetic due to my constant failures so I decided to take a gap year to find a new motive to change my life by spending a month in a foreign country.
Every day was a challenge. The problems that seemed so big at the time don’t seem so important when I look back :) I think I will be able to overcome the problems I’ll face in the future with calmness in my heart and think, “Oh.. it’s not that big of a deal!”
Now I can take care of myself and invest in me too.
Recently, I have been prioritizing things other than myself. I kept telling myself, “Let’s do it when we have more time.” I gave up on what I wanted to do then regretted saying “I’ll do it then”. Through this gap, I came to think that “current me is more important than anything” and I can finally invest for myself in the future.
After going through new adventures and changes, my attitude towards life changed.
Once the consulting was completed before beginning the project, I was encouraged to take a break and look back at myself to really think about me a lot. I believe it was very important for me to do this. The biggest goal was to focus on me without caring about what other people think or see. I aimed to find energy in my helpless life by challenging anything and experiencing a lot with the confidence that I can do anything.
There was no particular reason for me to travel to France as I chose to live there for a month for the purpose of the rest. Deciding to live in Montpellier, France was the best choice to be exposed to a new culture and language.
I got used to all the new things that I felt embarrassed and uncomfortable at the beginning. They were difficult but now looking back, I miss it so much. After going through this change, I feel that my attitude towards life has expanded and changed through my experience in France.
Living in Montpellier for a month was a meaningful experience learning a new language. I felt sorry for myself as I didn’t have a more in depth experience abroad. Also, I was energized quite a lot when I saw the friends I met at the language school with a clear goal in their lives.
My daily routine!
First of all, there was a French class in my program. I was worried about whether I could adapt and communicate well since I am lacking in my linguistic skills. When I heard that France was known for having pickpockets I was worried my wallet would be stolen or my belongings would be gone.
Sometimes I was disappointed, depressed, and frustrated because I couldn’t follow the French classes.
It was also possible to travel to the suburbs on the weekends. I went on a trip to Nice. The beaches were very beautiful and villefranche-sur-mer near Nice was beautiful as well. The chinese restaurant called Tiger Noodle on the way home was most memorable to me.
If you decide to go to France please look up information about the country!
I prepared for the class by listening to basic comprehension in French that Korea Gap Year showed me. Because of their help I was able to prepare to leave the country and find the things I wanted to do, and planned the schedule ensuring a great new start! :)
