    Da-eun’s Gap Year Review!

Hello, my name is Da-eun Lee and I am 28 years old. I love new beginnings, growth, and true happiness!

I realized that when do you have time to do what you truly are passionate about taking every moment as happiness.

In my future choices, I will focus on myself and move towards what I want to do. The gap year has given me a lot of inner growth and learning as I was able to improve my leather craft skills gaining experience as I would have as those who have practiced for 3 years in about 6 months.

Gap year was a success :)

Before the gap year, I felt helpless and lacking in accomplishments while working, so I started pursuing an independent life. Up until now, I have chosen my career and lived by other people’s opinions but now, I want to break away from that and find “a path that is truly for me” so I quit my job and participated in taking a gap year. The reason I chose this project in particular is because it was a hobby I picked up and I became convinced that I would feel greater satisfaction and happiness if I had this as my profession.

The sense of accomplishment I get from creating something out of nothing is huge for me. From designing the product and creating patterns to selecting materials, it is all part of the process.

After I became convinced that I wanted to pursue leather craft as a career, I looked for professional courses to gain better knowledge and experience in a short period of time through studying abroad. During that process, I found out about this school located in Florence, Italy. Choosing Korea Gap Year was a great opportunity for me as I receivedhelp in order to be prepared for this project, improve my main goal, and spend time developing and growing for myself.

After participating in this project, I am finally trying to live a meaningful life for myself.

Focus on yourself and lead a life that is self-directed. That is where you will find happiness.

My gap year goal was to become a person can lead my own life. In the past, I cared about other people’s opinions and wanted to be better, so I focused on my studies and work. I chose a job that was the best in other people’s opinions but as I worked as an office worker and settled into my daily routine, I suffered from a great deal of stress due to frustration and helplessness. I started to finally think about what I really wanted to do.

Filled with courage, I applied for this project. My goal was to become a person who can lead my life by focusing on myself, valuing the process and doing things slowly but accurately without getting caught up in competition with others at school through the gap year.

As much as I had aimed, I really focused on myself during my gap year. I felt like I was in charge of my life, and I came back feeling truly happy. I remained with that feeling. I believe those who are considering participating in the KoreaGap Year project should record their daily life or complete missions through blogs or YouTube for encouragement and motivation for themselves :)

Consistent practice and recording eventually led to my own growth.

When I think about what I gained through my gap year I am glad that I came here. I told myself if there is something I wanted to do, do it. When I lived abroad, even simple things like buying daily necessities or groceries were difficult. The language was difficult as it was my first time abroad so I was very stressed. As time went by, I was able to do things naturally that were difficult. “Just do it! Step by step.” Everyones afraid at first but let’s try one step at a time. Success comes from challenges so even if you don’t succeed at once there will be many challenges that will lead to success and overcome difficulties.

Blogging helped me overcome boredom and loneliness when living abroad. It helped me deal with this feeling of being scared and lonely. There was a 7-8 hour difference with Korea, so contacting my family or friends was difficult.

When the program ended, I had notes to look back at and understand when I had improved my motivation. I felt encouraged by my past self which was really great.

I met friends and people from various countries who enjoy the same hobby. I was really happy to meet friends with the same interests during this project! We shared tips and concerns with each other making valuable connections that helped me solve my problems along the way :)

Now that I have successfully completed my gap year, I have truly found what I wanted to do.

I realized that when you truly know what you want to do, time and learning feels precious within every moment there is happiness.

In the future, I will focus on myself and move towards what I want to do. This gap year has given me a lot of inner growth and learning. I was able to improve my leather crafting skills in 6 months as in Korea it would’ve taken me 3 years.

My gap year was a success :)

    My Daily Routine!

The school ran from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with a lunch break from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. I’d start my day by gathering tools before lessons began around 10 AM. These 30-minute English-led sessions were followed by hands-on leather crafting. Early on, I had time to make extra pieces, but as lessons grew more complex, keeping up became a challenge. For lunch, I usually packed a meal or grabbed a kebab nearby. Afternoons were spent honing my skills, fully immersed in the craft.

While working on the gap year project. I was able to travel around Italy. I traveled to Rome, Venice, Milan, and smaller cities near Florence such as the Tuscan wine tour and San Gimignano. Taking the Italo Trenitalia train was convenient to travel to nearby cities and is a must!

During the fall semester I attended, there was a two-week break around Christmas, and I was able to travel to all the surrounding cities. I went to Vienna, Austria, France, and London by plane. Since it is difficult to travel to Europe from Korea I recommend taking advantage of going.

    Preparation

Before leaving, I carefully handled all preparations such as applying for a long-term visa, booking flights, securing travel insurance, confirming accommodations, and applying for a residence permit.

I packed essentials I couldn’t find in Italy, like a mini rice cooker and an electric kettle, both of which proved invaluable. To avoid pickpockets, I relied on a secure backpack. Shopping was easy, and I enjoyed fresh, delicious meals from local markets. My dormitory was clean and safe, and by staying mindful of my belongings, I returnedhome without any issues.

    Experience ★★★★★

It was a valuable experience that helped me a lot in forming life values.

    Learning ★★★★★

I was able to improve my leather craft skills in 20 weeks which would have taken me over 3 years to learn in Korea. I was so satisfied with focusing on inner growth and learning.

    Environment ★★★★

It was really great to live in an environment where I could focus solely on leather crafts :)

    Safety ★★★★★

I think you can stay safely without much worry if you follow the basic precautions for living abroad! SInce Korea is so safe, I did feel much safer in Korea.

    Leisure ★★★★★

It was a shame that there was nothing to learn outside of school but this is Florence, the mecca of art, and I think you can have a good time by visiting the parks, museum, and tourist attractions.
