Learning English with friends from around the world in Vancouver, Canada — a beautiful city you'd want to live in at least once

In our country''s society age often plays the biggest role, but in Canada I was impressed that as long as you''re healthy you can continue doing what you can. So I felt that age doesn''t matter for what you want to do, and I thought I should find my own pace instead of adjusting to others'' gaze. ;)

    # Hello! I''m a university student currently taking a one-year gap year in Canada!

Hello, I''m a university student who spent a month on a Vancouver language-study gap year and experienced many precious things! I learned about gap year opportunities through a professor at school, and because I always wanted to improve my language skills, I decided on language study in Vancouver.

At first I only focused on language study, but through 1:1 consulting the thought grew and solidified: "Let''s use this time not only for language, but to go and try the things I truly wanted to challenge myself with!" So I ultimately obtained a working holiday visa and departed, and after the language study I personally plan to complete the working holiday before returning.

*Always wanting to challenge myself on a bigger stage but finding it hard to be brave, Baek O. planned a long-term path through 1:1 consulting — not only language study in Vancouver but also a working holiday — and departed. Not sure where to start or how to change best, and want a tailored plan? I highly recommend 1:1 consulting with a gap year specialist.

    # Go with the flow! Follow your feelings!

My biggest goals for my gap year were to gain confidence and to express my opinions confidently. I always had a strong desire to challenge myself, but I found it hard to be confident and I cared too much about others'' opinions. So I often went in the direction others wanted. But this time, I wanted to decide for myself and make it happen.During my gap year I set the simple yet challenging goal of confidently expressing what I want and what I don''t want, and of voicing my opinions.

Through consultingI thought about what I really wanted to gain from the gap year. The conclusion was not to hope for something big but reallyLet''s go with the flow and do it my way! It was. It might be an easy mission for someone, but for me, who was always guided by others'' expectations, it wasn''t an easy challenge, and I needed such an opportunity :)

Arriving in Vancouver and adapting, meeting friends from many countries at the language school, expressing my opinions as I thought, and having various experiences — it was a valuable experience where I could realize what I like and dislike and in what environments I''m more comfortable. Although my first gap year of one month, long yet short, has ended, I know well that it''s the start of my second challenge — the working holiday — so I plan to take a bold step forward based on this experience for a better me.

    # My personal mantra for the year! "Step by step at my own pace!"

I was able to experience a culture different from our country. In our country''s society age often plays the biggest role, but in Canada I was impressed that as long as you''re healthy you can continue doing what you can. So I felt that age doesn''t matter for what you want to do, and I thought I should find my own pace instead of adjusting to others'' gaze. ;)

Also, through the gap year project I met many new people, and among them there was a homestay Japanese roommate named ''Ayaka'' with whom I spent the most time during the month. It was amazing that even though our languages were different, as we spoke in English we gradually began to understand each other. I also met various friends at the language school — from Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Italy, and many more — and talked and connected with them. It was truly amazing and fun that people from different cultures gathered and communicated in one language!

It was such a happy and ecstatic moment that I wondered, ''Will a moment like this come again in my life?'' Through this opportunity, I feel like I got to know myself better and became closer to who I am.

Through 1:1 consulting, orientation, and the gap year mission after coming to Canada, so many people worked hard for my gap year, and it was a precious experience for me to get to know myself. With the working holiday ahead, I''m so excited about what will happen to me next! Thank you so much, gap year team!

    # Don''t worry about what others think. Focus only on the changes and goals you want!

During the month, above all, I think the biggest change was that I listened to and acted on my internal pace and the direction I pursue :)

Before participating, I wanted to take on challenges, but it took a lot of initiative and decisiveness for me to actually do so. I was very conscious of others'' opinions and worried that if I voiced my thoughts someone might look at me negatively, so I couldn''t easily speak up.HaBut as I took part in the project and saw various friends confidently expressing their opinions, I thought it was actually cool and felt, "I can do that too!" That gave me courage, and I gradually found myself taking action.I won''t stop challenging myself here; I''ll keep working to become a better me.

Rather than me giving advice, really excellent consulting teachers will do that,Rather than very big goals, if you simply come with the mindset of "I will make sure to accomplish this one thing while I''m here!", even a small goal is fine — that''s what I want to say.

My personal tips for preparing for a language program in Vancouver, Canada!

This was my first trip abroad. So I think I got a lot of advice from friends before going. Canada isn''t an Asian country! Just thinking about it felt a bit overwhelming at first, but as time passed I relaxed.

First, Gap Year shared a lot of useful information that I made good use of. I also gathered information from Naver blog reviews, YouTube, and other media and prepared bit by bit. Since it was my first overseas trip, I was very nervous and watched many airport transit videos!

If, like me, it''s your first time abroad, before departure you might imagine overseas life only based on your current environment. But since each country is different the farther you go, it helps to check small bits of information about the country you''ll visit in advance!

🇨🇦 Canada is home to many different ethnicities, so your hosts may be people from various countries. Meals differ from Korean food, so as a tip, bring some of your favorite foods from Korea in case the food doesn''t suit your taste!

🇨🇦 Also, the sunlight in Vancouver is strong, so sunglasses are a must!

🇨🇦 Before Gap Year I focused on conversational practice; using Netflix, YouTube, and shadowing learning methods was very helpful!

My Vancouver language-study Gap Year was!

    Experience★★★★★

: I believe that the chance to live abroad for a month is the best experience.

    Learning ★★★★★

: I was able to learn by directly listening to and expressing myself in English-speaking culture.

    Environment ★★★★★

: Overall it was relaxed, but I liked that everyone also had their own structure.

    Safety ★★★

: Some parts of downtown are not very safe, so as long as you are cautious about those areas, it''s safe.

    Leisure ★★★★

: There are many parks so you can ride a bike often, and they run a variety of activities, making it great for enjoying leisure time!
