Recharging warm love with children in Hanoi, Vietnam Go Nam-yeonGapper''s Review |
# Hello, I''m a student on leave who volunteered for 12 weeks in Hanoi, Vietnam!
Hello, I''m a student currently taking a gap year. At the time I wanted to take a gap year but I was worried about how to do it. Carrying those worries, I went to Korea Gap Year and spoke with a gap year consultant who recommended programs to me.
Among the recommended programs, this Korea Gap Year program felt more trustworthy because it had both ''Gap Year Certification'' and ''Best''. :)Especially,Because it''s volunteer work where you play with children, I thought I''d be able to feel both joy and a sense of fulfillment, so I ultimately chose this program!
*For Go Nam-yeon, who wanted to make good use of her leave of absence,we recommended a customized gap year plan through consulting :) Want a personalized plan tailored to your situation? We highly recommend a 1:1 consultation with a gap year specialist!

# Within diverse experiences, you gain a broader perspective and composure. And you get to know yourself better.
Through this experience, I wanted to have an even broader perspective and more mental composure. And I wanted to get to know myself better.I wanted to broaden my view outward and inward, to know myself more and make better choices.
After having many experiences, that''s certainly how I am now. While doing the project,I realized that many of the things I worried about in advance hardly actually happened. Also,I felt proud of myself for staying abroad alone for a long time, getting through things on my own, and making many friends. From now on, thinking about the experiences from this project, I can take on anything with more confidence.
# I received positive influences from people of all ages.
Regardless of age or gender, I received positive influences from everyone I met while volunteering. First, there are the children. As I worked hard at volunteering, I became closer and more bonded with the children, and was moved every day by those angelic kids. To be honest, until I did this project, I was awkward and unskilled at playing with young children. Because I wasn''t used to it. Now I''m relatively good at dealing with children, and I''m confident about expressing myself freely and experiencing things like the kids do. Haha

Apart from the children, the people at the volunteer organization I stayed with I learned passion and kindness from them. They were always like that. Thanks to that positive atmosphere, I was able to participate actively and work hard. Also, I became close with Vietnamese friends who worked at the local organizations or helped with volunteer activities, and we often hung out together. I made many other foreign friends who shared the accommodation, so we even traveled around northern Vietnam together! I also got close with a Korean friend who volunteered with me; we relied on each other a lot while living away from home and still keep in touch.

Honestly, there were many great things, but there were a few disappointing aspects. In particular, my immune system weakened as my living environment changed. Getting colds often wasn''t easy. As a precaution, I tried to wear a mask while sleeping and on public transport to avoid catching a cold. Just in case, it''s a good idea to bring Theraflu as a must-have!
# Getting to know yourself better means you can make better choices.
Compared to before doing the project, I definitely gained more confidence and began to think of myself firstI think I started to.By acting more proactively and confidently, I began to trust and love myself more. Previously, I was frustrated because I didn''t know what I wanted to do or what I was good at, but thanks to my gap year, I was able to spend time getting to know myself better.
The good memories and the difficult ones I had here — I believe they will all help me make better choices as I go forward in life. In conclusion, I truly think it was great to do the gap year project, so I want to recommend it to people around me!

Of course, before joining the project you can have all sorts of worries and concerns. However,Once you actually go, more unexpected good things happen than the things you worried about, so don''t hesitate and just give it a try! You gain something by doing anything rather than doing nothing. AndEven if you''re not confident in English, approach friends confidently. Your gap year life will become much more enjoyable!
# What is a day of volunteer work in Hanoi, Vietnam like?

In the morning, we have a meal provided by the accommodation and go to the kindergarten with colleagues who also volunteer there. In the morning we teach the children simple English and help with lunch. After that, the volunteers eat lunch together and take a break. During the break, you can go to a cafe or return to the kindergarten to take a nap. In the afternoon, we help the children eat snacks, finish classes, or play together by dancing or singing.
These activities are carried out on weekdays. After weekday activities or on weekends, you have entirely personal free time. Sometimes on Fridays activities are optional and sometimes not; this can vary depending on when you participate or the place of activity. If you wish to join, I recommend checking in advance with Korea Gap Year!

Making full use of weekends, I traveled around the outskirts of Hanoi. I traveled to Ninh Binh, Halong Bay, Ha Giang, and Hai Phong, and the place I most recommend is Ha Giang.I went on a Ha Giang bike tour with friends and was able to make special and fun memories. If you''re scared of riding a bike, I also recommend the Ninh Binh tour! It''s fulfilling — cycling along country roads, taking boat tours, and hiking. Haha. For Halong Bay, I recommend going when the weather is good, and if you go to Hai Phong, you must try the crab noodle soup!

Also, I became close with a Vietnamese friend and was invited to their family home — it was a truly special experience. If a Vietnamese friend invites you, definitely go :) .
# My tips for preparing for volunteer work in Hanoi, Vietnam!

I had many worries before leaving. Three months felt like it wasn''t short, and it was my first time going abroad alone. But as I prepared step by step, it was more than doable! I packed based on the checklist sent by Korea Gap Year and also got my visa issued.
# My Vietnam overseas volunteer gap year is!

Experience ★★★★★
: It''s my first time going abroad alone and staying for three months... it was truly an unforgettable experience :) . I''m proud of myself.
Learning ★★★★★
: I learned and experienced a lot while traveling!
Environment ★★★
: Hanoi is rich in sights and food! The noise and street environment, different from Korea, can feel a bit unfamiliar at first!
Safety ★★★
: In daily life, security was fine. Since motorbikes are Vietnam''s main mode of transport and the air and water differ from Korea, being a little cautious helps!
Leisure ★★★★
: The food is tasty and there are pleasant shopping malls. Prices are really inexpensive. I think it''s a great place to enjoy leisure!
Gap-year overseas volunteering is different from the typical volunteer work that just pads your resume and ends!!
