    # Hello! I''m a twenty-something who turned worries into confidence through a month living in Malta.

Hello!A twenty-something who returned from Malta full of English skills and confidenceI am.

Lately I had become a very timid person. I always lacked self-esteem, underestimated myself, and felt burdened by meeting others. So this time,I spent a month living in the unfamiliar place of Malta.I mustered up a lot of courage, and it was very successfulIt was.

In fact, when I was in middle and high school, I got along well with friends and enjoyed meeting people so much that I preferred hanging out over studying. I was quite extroverted. Then, before I knew it, after entering society I had become someone who disliked meeting people and trying new things, who would get scared and run away. Fortunately, because I was well aware of this about myself, I decided to join a gap year program to try to change thatI did.

*For Mr. Cheon O-chang, who was very exhausted from job-hunting and working life, an experience to fully boost his confidence was necessary. For an effective change for Mr. Cheon O-chang, we recommended a customized gap year plan through consulting :) If you want a tailored plan on where to start and how to change best, we highly recommend 1:1 consulting with a gap year specialist!

    # I no longer worry or get stressed in unfamiliar environments and around unfamiliar people.

I knew very well that I got stressed meeting others and couldn''t go out, so I wanted to change. So I wanted to go abroad somewhere, meet unfamiliar environments and new people, and see if I could be okay. I was convinced that by doing so, based on that experience I could let go of the gloomy past and be reborn. After spending four weeks in Malta, I felt that I was right.

    # The relaxed atmosphere in Malta made me a confident person.

If I list what I liked about Malta: the relaxed atmosphere, the good people, and the ample time.

First of all,What I liked most about Malta was that there was no prejudice or discrimination. Regardless of age, gender, or education, everyone accepted and treated me as a friend.

Unlike in Korea, Malta had a consistently relaxed atmosphere. Unlike the rushed, busy life in Korea, there was plenty of leisure—enough to sit in a café and chat over coffee with a stranger. In that kind of life, I realized that I''m okay as a person, and I was able to reflect on the difference between the happiness that a busy life brings and the happiness that comes from having leisure.

Secondly, that I met good people and made friendswhich was the case.It left many memories and I miss them a lot. I actually started the program to change myself, but aside from that I met many precious people.I was so happy and enjoyed being able to be with those friends for a month. Maybe that''s why, on the morning I was leaving to go home while packing, my chest felt heavy and I was sad, so it was hard to leave. The saying ''meetings are easy and farewells are hard'' really hit me. On the other hand, it made me determined to visit their countries later and meet them again.

Among them, if I had to pick the closest person, I could name one. He was a Japanese person who left Japan for personal reasons and came to study in Europe. I always met this person in the morning to drink coffee and have conversations to improve our English. Sometimes we went to karaoke together and sang, and sometimes we drank coffee in the evening and talked about Japanese and Korean cultures; he was a great companion.

Finally, that I had time during the month to think about what kind of person I am, and that I could enjoy the best time and place to encounter new people and environmentswas great.

    # It felt like new growth in my heart; my confidence grew anew.

Now that I''m back, I feel that my confidence has increased a lot. I used to be reluctant to meet people and afraid to try new things. Thanks to this gap year program, now I feel less stress about meeting people and I''m full of the desire to try new things.

that Idon''t speak English well, and even if I don''t initiate conversation or can''t do something well, I found out in Malta that there''s no one who would criticize you or watch you closely!I regretted to myself that I had been overly self-conscious and wondered why I cared so much about others'' views. Through this time I definitely feel that I have improved.

So,If there is someone really like me, I hope you will definitely participate.Of course, at first you''ll be very scared. You might think you can''t do this or that, and not have a single shred of belief that you can do it wellthat may not occur.I was like that too, so I know very well. And,Now that I''ve returned, I think people like that should participate. No one gives you a prize for doing well, you know. You don''t have to do as much as you want when you go! It''s 100 or 1000 times better than not going! Don''t let worries delay your challenge—please participate!!!

    # Malta language study: this is my daily routine here!

I''m not much of a breakfast person, so I woke up at 7, washed up and left, arrived at 8, had coffee with a friend at a nearby cafe, and attended class. Class started at 9:00 AM and ended at 12:30 PM. The first part of the class focused on listening and speaking, and based on that we studied grammar and writing. After class I went to places I wanted to visit or to the beach to hang out and ended the day.

Malta is an island country made up mainly of three islands: Malta, Comino, and Gozo. So wherever you go you''ll see emerald-colored seas. In particularThe Blue Grotto has a spectacular sea and cliffs, and since you can take a boat tour around it, I highly recommend visitingI recommend it. Comino and Gozo are smaller than Malta but have distinct cultures coexisting, and the horizon you see before you is a beautiful view you can only see there—it''s unforgettable.

    # My tips for preparing my Malta language-study gap year!

I was very worried while preparing. I tend to worry a lot anyway, but my confidence had dropped so much that I was left as a fearful, timid version of myself, and I couldn''t shake anything off—I worried right up until the day I left.

However, once I actually went, I had a great time. It was a turnaround for both myself and everyone. Haha.

I prepared using the checklist I received from Korea Gap Year and by searching for the essentials to take abroad. I thought that if even one item was missing I might want to return before a month was up, so I packed everything without leaving anything out... but after packing it all my luggage was too heavy, so I compromised at a total of 28 kg. Haha. Besides that, based on what I searched and the information from Korea Gap Year, I busily prepared things like overseas roaming, cards, cash, passport, etc.

    Experience ★★★★★

: New friends, a new language, a new environment, and a new culture—everything was wonderful.

    Learning ★★★★★

: It was great to learn English directly from native speakers. Using only the English I was learning greatly improved my fluency and adaptability!

    Environment ★★★★★

: Malta has a Mediterranean climate, so it''s not humid and it''s cool in the shade. I didn''t see any bugs! There are many cute cats.

    Safety ★★★★★

: I generally felt it was safe!! If you avoid wandering alone late at night and follow safety guidelines—and take care of your own safety—your trip will be even safer!

    Leisure ★★★★

: The tourist spots and the sea are wonderful. Even after seeing everything, it''s nice that you can spend any extra time completely on your own.
