A special volunteer trip in Lisbon, Portugal — one of the most beautiful regions in the world! Review by Park O-hwan, a gap-year participant |
# Hello. I participated in volunteer work in Lisbon, Portugal.

Hello. Through Gap Year I was able to go on a volunteer trip to Lisbon, Portugal, at the westernmost edge of Europe.
Through the Gap Year website I learned that Portugal is one of the most beautiful countries in the world,
and also one of the safest in Europe, and that the cost of living isn''t high, which sparked my interest.
I also thought that food volunteer work for homeless people and elderly people living alone would be personally meaningful,
so I decided to join the project ''A special volunteer trip in Lisbon, Portugal — one of the most beautiful regions in the world!'' 🤗
* For Mr. Park O-hwan, who set a goal of discovering a new side of himself through Gap Year,a tailored 1:1 personal mission was provided, including activities where the participant could freely do what they wanted and activities to truly enjoy the Gap Year.

# I wanted to meet a new version of myself.

Before participating in the volunteer work in Lisbon, Portugal,I focused on my shortcomings and viewed the world through various personal prejudices.
However, by participating in the program I came to accept myself as I am.
And I learned that there are many different ways of living in the world,
and as a bonus I gained the confidence of ''I can do something too.'' 🎁
# I began to view the world from a broader perspective.

I realized that the world is vast, that there are diverse people, and that there are many different ways of living.
I gained the confidence to step out of the well filled with my own thoughts and to look farther,
and I developed the mindset to accept different kinds of people.
# I enjoyed the unique experience.

It was my first time going to Europe, so I had a lot of fear and worries.
However, through volunteering in Lisbon, Portugal, I was glad to have truly unique experiences.
I met friends of various nationalities and was able to live with them, and I could stay in a seaside town in Portugal,
and since it is one of the safest countries in Europe, I was able to participate feeling both physically and mentally safe and satisfied.
I am sure these novel experiences in an unfamiliar environment will become one of the most important sources of growth in my twenties. 🙌🏻
# What is a typical day of volunteering in Lisbon, Portugal?

Usually we join from around 5:30 to 6:00 PM to deliver food to elderly people living alone or,
we prepare food, trim ingredients, and do the dishes.
Every Friday we went to restaurants and bakeries to collect leftover food.
Although work starts at 6 PM, in Portugal the sun sets around 9 PM,
so it felt more like working in the afternoon than starting work in the evening.
(*Activities may be scheduled for the morning / lunchtime / or afternoon shifts depending on local circumstancesso please note!)
