While spending my gap year in Bali, I loved being able to teach English to the lovely children and have a great time with them.

I also had many conversations with local residents who are interested in Korean culture and language, and we came to understand each other''s cultures!

I finished my gap year feeling proud, realizing that my efforts were a great help to others!!

    # Hello. I''m a university student who participated in a Bali overseas volunteer project through Gap Year!

Hello, I''m a 23-year-old university student who participated in a Bali overseas volunteer project. I like meeting people and have a positive personality,I like summer and I get happy when I eat delicious food haha

I have always been very interested in overseas volunteer work that involves teaching young children. While looking for such volunteer projects, I learned about the Gap Year Bali overseas volunteer & travel project — a volunteer travel program — and applied without hesitation. Bali was a place I had always wanted to visit, and I thought it would be an opportunity to meet many people in a beautiful natural environment full of unique culture.

*For participants who wanted a different volunteering experience and new gap year experiences, daily tailored one-on-one personal missions were provided to improve English skills and to contemplate and set life direction, and a gap year notebook was also provided to reflect on oneself and make plans.

    # Through this overseas volunteer activity, I wanted to communicate with the children!

Through this Bali overseas volunteer gap year project, I wanted to communicate with the children. And rather than rushing to see many places, I wanted to stay in one place for a while and take the time to understand that country''s culture.I also didn''t have perfect English skills, but through this overseas volunteer experience I wanted to be of some help to the local people in Bali!

    # What preparations did I make before going on the Bali overseas volunteer activity?

I checked and organized all the orientation materials sent by Korea Gap Year.I packed while following the checklist they sent, memorized basic Indonesian greetings, and prepared a small number of souvenirs that reflect Korean aesthetics! haha

    # I was happy to be able to spend time with truly lovely children while living in Bali!

The best part of my time in Bali was meeting the lovely children and being able to teach them English; they followed my classes well, so I was able to have a fun time!

And not only the local children but also many local residents were very interested in Korean culture and language, so they showed me a lot of interest and asked many questions, which allowed me to have many conversations haha

    # From now on, I feel confident that no matter the language, I can adapt well anywhere in the world!

Before my gap year, I liked people but tended to be cautious about interacting with them and about safety—especially when I went abroad.

But through this Bali volunteer trip, I was able to break down those barriers, and I realized that my efforts can be a great help to others. I also gained confidence that from now on, regardless of language, I can communicate with the people there and adapt well wherever I go! :)

    # A day in the Bali volunteer project!

The Bali volunteer project''s schedule starts at 8:00 AM. We went to an elementary school and taught English to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders until 9:30.From 10 to 11 AM we prepared lessons for the next day, and at 2:00 PM we met local guides and taught them English. They gave me a tour! At 7:30 PM, on evenings with an evening class we met middle and high school students and talked a lot, and on evenings without a class we explored the area or relaxed with a massage! :)

    # My Bali volunteer prep tips!

    - Language

: During the volunteer project, the English ability of locals varies, so it''s good to have basic English skills, but high-level fluency isn''t required.

    - Accommodation & meals

: The meals provided at the accommodation include Indonesian and Western dishes, and they''re really delicious, so you''ll adapt well!

    - What to bring

: Make sure to bring a hat, mosquito repellent, and travel insurance! Bali has strong sunlight, so be sure to pack a hat!
